The Serie B, officially known as Serie BKT for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest division in the Italian football league system after the Serie A. It has been operating for over ninety years since the 1929–30 season. It had been organized by Lega Calcio until 2010 and the Lega Serie B ever since. Common nicknames for the league are campionato cadetto and cadetteria, since cadetto is the Italian name for junior or cadet.
The 1936–37 Serie A season was won by Bologna.
Torino were declared 1948–49 Serie A champions on 6 May 1949, after the Superga tragedy, an air disaster that killed the entire Torino squad. At the time of the declaration, Torino led the runner-up Internazionale by four points with four matches remaining. Their remaining four matches were played by their reserve team, and they finished the league five points ahead of the runner up.

Puma replaced Nike as manufacturer of the official Serie B match ball, a relationship that continues today.
