Sword Art Online is an anime television series based on the light novel series of the same title written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The anime adaptation of Sword Art Online was announced at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2011, along with Reki Kawahara's other light novel series, Accel World . [1] The anime is produced by Aniplex and Genco, animated by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Ito with music by Yuki Kajiura. [2] The first season aired on Tokyo MX, tvk, TV Saitama, TV Aichi, RKB, HBC and MBS between July 8 and December 23, 2012, and on AT-X, Chiba TV and BS11 at later dates. [3] Adult Swim's Toonami programming block aired the anime starting on July 28, 2013. [4] The series was also streamed on Crunchyroll and Hulu. [5]

Contents

A second season, titled Sword Art Online II, aired July 5 to December 20, 2014. [6] [7] At Katsucon, it was announced that the English dub of the second season would air on Adult Swim's Toonami on March 29, 2015. [8]

A third season, titled Sword Art Online: Alicization, began airing on October 7, 2018, [9] with a one-hour world premiere which aired in Japan, the United States, Australia, France, Germany, Russia and South Korea on September 15, 2018. [10] The first half of Sword Art Online: Alicization aired from October 7, 2018 through March 31, 2019. The second half, titled War of Underworld, aired on October 13, 2019. The final part of the War of Underworld series was originally scheduled to premiere on April 26, 2020, but due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, it was rescheduled to July 12, 2020.

Alicization covered four cours (47 episodes) and adapted from the novel's ninth volume, Alicization Beginning, to the eighteenth volume, Alicization Lasting. [11] The English dub of the third season premiered on February 10, 2019 on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block. [12] The English dub version for the second cour of the second part of the third season premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami on November 8, 2020. [13]

Katanagatari is a Japanese light novel series written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Take. The series is published by Kodansha under the Kodansha Box imprint. The story revolves around a katanagari, or "sword hunt" for 12 weapons that were created by a single swordsmith. <i>Sword Art Online</i> Japanese light novel series and its adaptations

Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The series takes place in the then-near future and focuses on protagonists Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki as they play through various virtual reality MMORPG worlds. Kawahara originally wrote the series as a web novel on his website from 2002 to 2008. The light novels began publication on ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 10, 2009, with a spin-off series launching in October 2012. The series has spawned twelve manga adaptations published by ASCII Media Works and Kadokawa. The novels and the manga adaptations have been licensed for release in North America by Yen Press.

<i>Sword Art Online</i> (season 1) Season of television series

Sword Art Online is a science fantasy anime series adapted from the light novel series of the same title written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. It was produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Itō. It is divided into the "Aincrad" and "Fairy Dance" arcs, respectively adapted from volumes 1, 2 and one story of 8, and 3&4 from the original material. The story of the first season follows the adventures of Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki, two players who are trapped in the virtual world of "Sword Art Online" (SAO). They are tasked to clear all 100 Floors and defeat the final boss in order to be freed from the game. Three months after the death game, Kazuto discovers that Asuna is being held captive in "ALfheim Online" (ALO), a spiritual successor to SAO, where the players assume the roles of fairies. Kazuto enters the game and allies himself with his sister Suguha "Leafa" Kirigaya to rescue Asuna from captivity.

<i>Sword Art Online II</i> Season of television series

The second season of Sword Art Online, titled Sword Art Online II, is an anime series adapted from the light novel series of the same title written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by Abec. It was produced by A-1 Pictures, and directed by Tomohiko Itō. It is divided into the story arc "Phantom Bullet" which adapts volume 5 and 6 and in the Side Stories "Calibur" and "Mother's Rosario" which are respectively adapted from volume 7 and 8 of the light novel. The episodes are each 23 minutes in length and adapts Kawahara's light novels from the fifth through the seventh volumes as well as parts of the eighth volume. The story of the second season follows Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya as he plays the new virtual reality game called "Gun Gale Online" (GGO), where he allies himself with a girl named Shino "Sinon" Asada and enters a tournament to investigate a player known only as "Death Gun", who has the ability to kill a person in the real world by killing their virtual avatar. Kirito and his friends return to "Alfheim Online" (ALO) to retrieve the Holy Sword Excaliber from Thrym, the King of the Frost Giants, in order to restore the city of Jötunheimr back to its former glory. Asuna befriends a girl named Yuuki Konno, leader of the Sleeping Knights, who asks Asuna to join them in one last quest together. However, Asuna later discovers that Yuuki is suffering from a terminal illness and does not have very long to live.

<i>Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online</i> Japanese light novel and its adaptations

Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online is a Japanese light novel series written by Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrated by Kouhaku Kuroboshi. The series is a spin-off of Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online series. A manga adaptation by Tadadi Tamori launched in 2015, and an anime television series adaptation by studio 3Hz aired between April and June 2018. Both the light novels and the manga adaptation are published in North America by Yen Press, while the anime is licensed by Aniplex of America.

Reona is a Japanese singer who is signed to Sacra Music. Having been active as a cosplayer and independent musician, she made her major debut in 2018 as the singing voice of the character Elza Kanzaki in the anime series Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. <i>Sword Art Online: Alicization</i> Season of television series

Sword Art Online: Alicization is the third season of the anime series adapted from the light novel series Sword Art Online, written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. It is animated by A-1 Pictures and directed by Manabu Ono. It covers the first part of the "Alicization" arc and adapts from the novel's ninth volume, Alicization Beginning, to the fourteenth volume, Alicization Uniting. The second part of the anime, titled Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld, adapts from the novel's fifteenth volume, Alicization Invading, to the eighteenth volume, Alicization Lasting. While not covered in the light novels, Alicization takes place after Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, as it incorporates elements from the film not found in the novels.

This is the second film, after Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, of the Sword Art Online anime series. The film depicts the story of Asuna's initial struggle to cope with being trapped in Sword Art Online along with her friend Mito, the first encounter between her and Kirito, and general in-depth coverage of events that occurred on Aincrad's first floor that were either skimmed over or skipped entirely in the original series. The film premiered in Japan on October 30, 2021.

<i>Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba</i> (season 1) Season of television series

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is an anime series based on the manga series of the same title, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. The anime television series adaptation by studio Ufotable was announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump on June 4, 2018. The first season adapts the first seven volumes of the manga series, and it aired from April 6 to September 28, 2019, on Tokyo MX, GTV, GYT, BS11, and other channels. Haruo Sotozaki directed the anime with scripts by the Ufotable staff. Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina composed the music, and Akira Matsushima is the character designer. Hikaru Kondo is the producer.

Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night is a 2022 Japanese animated science fiction action adventure film based on the Sword Art Online: Progressive light novels written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec and a sequel to the 2021 film Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night. The staff and cast from the first film reprised their roles, including production by A-1 Pictures and direction by Ayako Kōno, with character designs by Kento Toya and music by Yuki Kajiura. It was released on October 22, 2022.
