The UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart is a record chart which ranks the best-selling rock and heavy metal albums in the United Kingdom. Compiled and published by the Official Charts Company, the data is based on each album's weekly physical sales, digital downloads and streams. [1] In 2008, there were 24 albums that topped the 52 published charts. The first number-one album of the year was Led Zeppelin's debut album Led Zeppelin , which topped the chart for the week ending 24 November 2007 and remained at number one for seven weeks, including the first week of 2008. [2] The final number-one album of the year was Chinese Democracy , the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, which topped the chart for the week ending 6 December and remained at number one until 10 January 2009.

The most successful album on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart in 2008 was Nickelback's fifth studio album All the Right Reasons , which spent a total of twelve weeks at number one over four separate spells. All the Right Reasons was also the best-selling rock and metal album of the year in the UK, ranking 11th in the UK End of Year Albums Chart. [3] AC/DC's Black Ice and Chinese Democracy by Guns N' Roses each spent four weeks at number one during the year, while three albums – Muse's HAARP , Kid Rock's Rock n Roll Jesus and Metallica's Death Magnetic – were all number one for three weeks during 2008. An additional five albums – Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace , Good to Be Bad , Somewhere Back in Time , Indestructible and All Hope Is Gone each spent two weeks at number one during the year.

The American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold has released seven studio albums, one soundtrack album, one live album, two compilation albums, 31 singles, two video albums and 26 music videos. Formed in Huntington Beach, California in 1999, the band originally featured vocalist M. Shadows, guitarist Zacky Vengeance, bassist Matt Wendt and drummer The Rev. Synyster Gates joined as lead guitarist in 2001, just after the group released its debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet on Good Life Recordings, which was later reissued on Hopeless Records.

The discography of Trivium, an American heavy metal band, consists of nine studio albums, one extended play, two demo albums, 37 singles and 29 music videos. Formed in Orlando, Florida in 1999, the group's first recording lineup included vocalist and guitarist Matt Heafy, bassist Brent Young and drummer Travis Smith, who together released Ember to Inferno on Lifeforce Records in 2003. After the addition of guitarist Corey Beaulieu and new bassist Paolo Gregoletto in place of Young, the band signed with Roadrunner Records and released Ascendancy in 2005, which reached number 151 on the US Billboard 200. It also reached number 79 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The Crusade followed in 2006, peaking at number 25 on the Billboard 200 and number 7 on the UK Albums Chart. The album's second single "Anthem " reached number 40 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart, while its third single "The Rising" was the band's first to register on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, reaching number 32.

The discography of Biffy Clyro, a Scottish alternative rock band from Ayrshire, consists of eight studio albums, three live albums, seven compilations, one soundtrack, six extended plays (EPs), 42 singles, 36 music videos and six other appearances. Formed in 1995 by vocalist and guitarist Simon Neil, bassist James Johnston and drummer Ben Johnston, Biffy Clyro released their debut EP thekidswhopoptodaywillrocktomorrow in 2000 through Electric Honey, and later signed with Beggars Banquet Records. The band's debut full-length album Blackened Sky was released in 2002, reaching number 25 on the Scottish Albums Chart. The Vertigo of Bliss followed in 2003, with single "Questions and Answers" reaching the top ten of the Scottish Singles Chart. The band's third and final album on Beggars Banquet, Infinity Land, peaked at number 13 in Scotland. "Glitter and Trauma", "My Recovery Injection" and "Only One Word Comes to Mind" all reached the singles chart top ten.

The American rock band Paramore has released five studio albums, five extended plays, two live albums, twenty three singles, one video album, and twenty six music videos. The band was formed in Franklin, Tennessee, in 2004 by lead vocalist Hayley Williams with guitarists Josh Farro and Taylor York, bassist Jeremy Davis, and drummer Zac Farro. In 2005, Paramore signed with the New York City-based Fueled by Ramen and released their debut album entitled All We Know Is Falling. Three singles were released from the album, but none of them charted. The album did not chart in the Billboard 200 either, although it peaked at number thirty in the Billboard Top Heatseekers. All We Know Is Falling received Gold certification in the United Kingdom and in July 2014 the RIAA certified the album Gold in the United States.

The discography of The Sword, an American heavy metal band, consists of six studio albums, one live album, three compilation albums, one extended play (EP), three split releases, 13 singles and ten music video. Originally formed in Austin, Texas in 2003 by vocalist and guitarist John D. Cronise with guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Trivett Wingo, the band signed with Kemado Records in 2005 and released debut album Age of Winters the following year. "Freya" was released as a single in 2007, followed by a split EP with Swedish band Witchcraft featuring new track "Sea of Spears" and a cover version of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song".

The 2008 follow-up Suicide Season reached the UK top 50 and charted in the US for the first time when it reached number 107 on the Billboard 200. In November 2009, an expanded version of the album titled Suicide Season Cut Up! was released, featuring remixes and videos.
