The club has won the Liga six times, the Spanish Cup eight times, the Spanish Super Cup one time, the Copa Eva Duarte one time, the UEFA Cup three times, the European Cup Winners' Cup one time, the European Super Cup twice and the Intertoto Cup one time but has never won the UEFA Champions League, finishing runners-up twice. Valencia Club de Fútbol, commonly referred to as Valencia CF, is a Spanish professional football club based in Valencia, Spain, that currently plays in La Liga, the top flight of the Spanish league system. Valencia was founded in 1919 and has played its home games at the 49,430-seater Mestalla since 1923.
The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, commonly known as the Primera División or La Liga and officially as LaLiga EA Sports since 2023 for sponsorship reasons, is the top men's professional football division of the Spanish football league system. It is controlled by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional and is contested by 20 teams over a 38-matchday period.

The 1997–98 FC Barcelona season saw the club win the La Liga title and the Copa Del Rey, under the guidance of new coach Louis van Gaal. Hired from Ajax Amsterdam, Van Gaal brought striker Sonny Anderson and attacking midfielder Rivaldo with him. The club sold Ronaldo to Inter Milan just before the season began, with Anderson becoming their main striker. Van Gaal introduced a 4-3-3 formation to Barcelona, under which Rivaldo scored 20 goals in the league as centre forward. Barcelona won their 15th La Liga title, 2nd European Super Cup title and their 24th Copa del Rey title, thus winning a domestic double. Barcelona crashed out of the UEFA Champions League, finishing last in their group.
