The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an intergovernmental organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. It was established in 1957 as an autonomous organization within the United Nations system; though governed by its own founding treaty, the organization reports to both the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations, and is headquartered at the UN Office at Vienna, Austria.
Gregory L. Schulte was the U.S. ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency from July 2005 through June 2009. Schulte served as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations Office at Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and other international organizations in Vienna. Assuming his post on July 13, 2005, Schulte was charged with advancing the President's agenda in countering proliferation, terrorism, organized crime, and corruption, while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The Vienna International Centre (VIC) is the campus and building complex hosting the United Nations Office at Vienna. It is colloquially also known as UNO City.
The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) is one of the four major office sites of the United Nations where numerous different UN agencies have a joint presence. The office complex is located in Vienna, the capital of Austria, and is part of the Vienna International Centre, a cluster of several major international organizations. UNOV was established on 1 January 1980, and was the third such complex to be created.

He was Secretary and Officer-in-charge Permanent Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva then High Commissioner to Tanganyika, Tanzania then Uganda. He was also ambassador to Kenya and High Commissioner to Zanzibar and then the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Poland, Austria, and to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization then to Denmark. During his time as ambassador to Austria, on behalf of the Government of Canada he signed Canada's Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons with the International Atomic Energy Agency's Sigvard Eklund.
Ali Akbar Salehi is an Iranian academic, diplomat and former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, who served in this position from 2009 to 2010 and also from 2013 to 2021. He served for the first time as head of the AEOI from 2009 to 2010 and was appointed to the post for a second time on 16 August 2013. Before the appointment of his latter position, he was foreign affairs minister from 2010 to 2013. He was also the Iranian representative in the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1998 to 2003.

In May 2019, it was announced that Philip Goldberg would replace Macmanus as nominee to be the next United States Ambassador to Colombia.
