  • From 2005 to 2009 he was Deputy Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • From 2010 to 2014 he was Iranian ambassador to the Netherlands and concurrently Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and International Legal Organizations based in The Hague.
  • From 2014 to 2018 he was Deputy Secretary General of the High Council for Human Rights in International Affairs and International Judicial Cooperation.
  • From 2014 to 2018 he was Chairman of the National Committee for the Universal Periodic Review and Chair of the Human Rights Coordinating Committee.
  • From 2015 to 2018 he was Chief of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Nuclear Committee, and in the Supreme National Security Council.

In 1996 he became Bachelor in Political Relations and in 1998 a Master in Diplomacy and International Organizations, both obtained at the College of International Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2017 he was graduated as a PhD in Public Law from Allameh Tabatabaei University. [5]

He was Secretary and Officer-in-charge Permanent Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva then High Commissioner to Tanganyika, Tanzania then Uganda. He was also ambassador to Kenya and High Commissioner to Zanzibar and then the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Poland, Austria, and to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization then to Denmark. During his time as ambassador to Austria, on behalf of the Government of Canada he signed Canada's Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons with the International Atomic Energy Agency's Sigvard Eklund.

Ali Akbar Salehi is an Iranian academic, diplomat and former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, who served in this position from 2009 to 2010 and also from 2013 to 2021. He served for the first time as head of the AEOI from 2009 to 2010 and was appointed to the post for a second time on 16 August 2013. Before the appointment of his latter position, he was foreign affairs minister from 2010 to 2013. He was also the Iranian representative in the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1998 to 2003.
