Jiang Zemin served as the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1989 to 2002, as chairman of the Central Military Commission from 1989 to 2004, and as president of China from 1993 to 2003. He has received multiple honours and recognition from several countries.

Jiang Zemin, the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1989 to 2002, and the president of the People's Republic of China from 1993 to 2003, died on 30 November 2022, at the age of 96, in Shanghai. According to Xinhua News Agency, he died at 12:13 local time, from leukemia and multiple organ failures. Following a private funeral at PLA General Hospital and cremation at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery, a state funeral for Jiang was held at the Great Hall of the People the next day on 6 December 2022. It was the first major state funeral held in China since 1997 when Deng Xiaoping died.

At the invitation of President Johannes Rau of the Federal Republic of Germany, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Leader of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, President Olusegun Obasanjo of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Ben Ali of the Republic of Tunisia, President Seyed Mohammad Khatami of the Islamic Republic of Iran, President Jiang Zemin paid a state visit to these five countries from April 8 to 22, 2002. During the visit, China signed several cooperation agreements with the three countries, encompassing diverse sectors such as trade and economy, culture, agriculture, science and technology, education, oil and gas, telecommunications, and transportation.

President of Peru Dina Boluarte pays a state visit to China to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during June 25, 2024 to June 29, 2024. The visit resulted in the signing of a number of China-Peru cooperation agreements, and the two sides expect China to bring more new technologies into Peru and make the cooperation between China and Peru a model of China-Latin America cooperation.

From September 14 to 16, 2022, Chinese President and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping attends the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Samarkand, and pay state visits to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan at the invitation of the Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

At the invitation of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, President of the United Republic of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete, President of the Republic of South Africa Jacob Zuma and President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso, the President of China and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping left Beijing on the morning of March 22 to pay a state visit to these four countries and attend the 5th BRICS summit held in Durban, South Africa. The trip is also Xi's first foreign state visit since he became the Paramount leader of China in November 2012.
