Before Uganda's independence in 1962, the main banks in Uganda were Barclays ; Grindlays, Standard Bank and the Bank of Baroda from India. The currency was issued by the East African Currency Board, a London-based body. In 1966, the Bank of Uganda (BoU), which controlled the issue of currency and managed foreign exchange reserves, became the central bank and national banking regulator. The government-owned Uganda Commercial Bank and the Uganda Development Bank were launched in the 1960s. Guaranty Trust Bank (Uganda), commonly referred to as GT Bank Uganda, is a Tier II credit services company in Uganda. It was previously licensed as commercial bank by Bank of Uganda, the central bank and the national banking regulator of that country. The Bank of Uganda gave GTBank Uganda from 1 April 2024 until 30 June 2024 to transition from a Tier I commercial bank to a Tier II credit company, due to capitalization issues.

Diamond Trust Bank Group, in short DTB Group, is an African banking group active in Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The flagship company of the group, Diamond Trust Bank Kenya, is licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya, the central bank and national banking regulator in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community.

Absa Bank Uganda Limited, formerly known as Barclays Bank of Uganda Limited, is a commercial bank in Uganda. It is licensed by the Bank of Uganda, the central bank and national banking regulator. The bank is a subsidiary of Absa Group Limited, a financial services conglomerate, based in South Africa, with banking subsidiaries in 12 African countries and representative offices in two other African countries. Absa Bank Group, whose shares trade on the JSE Limited, was reported to have total assets in excess of US$91 billion, as of October 2019. 

The Mukwano Group of Companies, commonly known as the Mukwano Group, is a conglomerate based in Uganda, with operations in other East African countries.

ABC Bank (Uganda), whose full name is ABC Capital Bank Uganda Limited, is a Tier II credit institution in Uganda that is licensed by the Bank of Uganda, the central bank and national banking regulator. Previously licensed as a commercial bank, the institution was given between 1 April 2024 and 1 July 2024 to re-organize as a Tier II institution, close all customer checking accounts and cease dealing in foreign exchange.

United Bank for Africa Uganda Limited, also UBA Uganda, is a commercial bank in Uganda. It is licensed by the Bank of Uganda, the central bank and national banking regulator. UBA Uganda is a subsidiary of the United Bank for Africa, headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, with a presence in twenty African countries, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. The stock of UBA Transnational trades on the Nigeria Stock Exchange under the symbol UBA.

Opportunity Bank Uganda Limited (OBUL), is a Tier II credit institution in Uganda. It was previously registered as a commercial bank by the Bank of Uganda, the central bank and national banking regulator. The institution received a commercial banking license on 25 September 2019.

Exim Bank (Tanzania) (EBT), is a commercial bank in Tanzania, the second-largest economy in the East African Community. The bank is licensed by the Bank of Tanzania, which is the country's central bank and national banking regulator.

Commercial Bank of Africa Group is a financial services provider in East Africa. Its headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, with subsidiaries in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Ivory Coast.

Exim Bank (Uganda) (EBU), commonly known as Exim Bank, is a commercial bank in Uganda. It is one of the commercial banks licensed by the Bank of Uganda (BOU), the central bank and national banking regulator. EBU is a member of the Exim Bank Group (East Africa), a large financial services conglomerate with subsidiaries in Tanzania, Comoros, Uganda and Djibouti. The group also maintains a representative office in Ethiopia.

Edigold Monday, a Ugandan accountant, businesswoman, bank executive, and educator. She is the Uganda Country Director of Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe's foundation for international cooperation ., since December 2018.

Mathias Katamba is a Ugandan economist, business executive, banker and entrepreneur. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of DFCU Bank, the second-largest commercial bank in Uganda, effective January 2019.

Diamond Trust Bank Tanzania Plc (DTBT) is a commercial bank in Tanzania, licensed by the Bank of Tanzania.

Salaam Bank Uganda, formerly Top Finance Bank Limited (TFBL), is a commercial bank in Uganda. The institution received an Islamic commercial banking license, on 8 September 2023. The license was personally handed over by the Acting Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr Michael Ating-Ego. It is the first commercial bank in the country authorized to operate according to Islamic Shari'ah law.

Andrew Kabeera,, is a Ugandan, businessman and incumbent executive director at PostBank Uganda. He took up his current assignment in July 2020. Immediately before that, he was the chief operating officer at DFCU Bank, another large commercial Bank in Uganda.
