The first female head of a federal subject in the Russian Federation was Valentina Bronevich, who was Governor of Koryak Autonomous Okrug from 1996 to 2000.
Of the current 89 heads of federal subjects, none are women. The last woman to hold a governor's position was Natalya Komarova, who served as the Governor of Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug until 2024.
