The president of Kazakhstan holds the highest authority in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Established under the Constitution of Kazakhstan, the president is the head of state and is directly elected by the people for a nonrenewable term of seven years. Alongside the prime minister, the president leads the executive branch of the Kazakh government and serves as the commander-in-chief of the Kazakh Armed Forces. [1] Since the establishment of the office of the presidency on 24 April 1990, under the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, Kazakhstan has had only two individuals serve as president. [2] The current president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, assumed office on 20 March 2019, following the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the country's founding president. [3]

Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev is a Kazakh politician who served as the first President of Kazakhstan, from the country's independence in 1991 until his formal resignation in 2019, and as the Chairman of the Security Council of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 2022.
Kassym-Jomart Kemeluly Tokayev is a Kazakh politician and diplomat who has served as the President of Kazakhstan since 2019. Between 20 March and 12 June 2019, he served as acting president after the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who had been president for nearly three decades.
The Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the bicameral legislature of Kazakhstan. The lower house is the Mäjilis, with 98 seats which are elected to five-year terms. The upper house is the Senate, which has 50 members.
The Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, commonly shortened as Mazhilis, is the lower house of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, alongside the upper house Senate. Together, they form the national bicameral legislature of Kazakhstan, responsible for enacting legislation. Established by the Constitution of Kazakhstan following the 1995 constitutional referendum, the Mazhilis was first convened in 1996. The chamber plays role in the legislative process, debating and passing laws, where lawmakers discuss key issues facing the country and propose solutions to address them by representing the interests of constituents.
The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan is the head of government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the holder of its fourth highest office, after the president of Kazakhstan, Chairman of Senate and Chairman of Majilis. The prime minister heads the cabinet and advises the president in the every day execution of the functions of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.
Zharmakhan Aitbaiuly Tuyakbay is a retired Kazakh politician. He was the chairman of the Nationwide Social Democratic Party from 2007 to 2019 and prior to that, he served as the Mäjilis chairman from 1999 to 2004.
Kanat Bekmyrzauly Saudabayev is a Kazakh politician who served as the State Secretary of Kazakhstan from 2007 to 2012. Prior to that, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2011 and in 1994, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United States from 2000 to 2007, Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1996 to 1999 and Ambassador to Turkey from 1994 to 1996.
Ermukhamet Qabidenuly Ertisbaev is a Kazakh politician and diplomat who has served as the chairman of the People's Party of Kazakhstan since 27 March 2022. Prior to that, he served as the Kazakh ambassador to Belarus from November 2017 to August 2019 and to Georgia from April 2013 to November 2017.
Amanat, previously known as Nūr Otan until 2022, is a political party in Kazakhstan. Being the largest to date, it has been the ruling party of the country from 1999, with a membership claiming to be of over 762,000 people in 2007. The Amanat has been led by Erlan Qoşanov since 26 April 2022.
Erik Magzumuly Asanbayev was a Kazakh statesman and vice-president of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 1996.
Sergey Alexandrovich Tereshchenko was a Kazakhstani politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 1994 and later as the acting chairman of Otan from 1999 to 2002.
Nurlan Zairollauly Nigmatulin is a Kazakh politician who served as the Chairman of the Mäjilis from 22 June 2016 to 1 February 2022 and from 20 January 2012 to 3 April 2014. Prior to that, he headed the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan, and was the first deputy chairman of Nur Otan from 2009 to 2012, and äkim of Karaganda Region from 2006 to 2009.
Abish Kekilbayev was a Kazakh writer and politician who served as a Senator of Kazakhstan from 2002 to 2010, State Secretary of Kazakhstan from 1996 to 2002, and the Supreme Council Chairman from 1994 until its dissolution in 1995.
Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 10 January 2021 to elect the members of the Mäjilis to the 7th Parliament of Kazakhstan. They were the eighth legislative elections in Kazakhstan's history since independence and coincided with the 2021 local elections. The elections were the first to be held under Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's presidency and the first since 2004 to be held at the normally scheduled date, rather than due to an early dissolution of the Mäjilis.
Darhan Amanuly Kaletaev is a Kazakh politician who serves as the Kazakh Ambassador to Ukraine. Since October 12, 2020 to 30 March 2022, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Moldova concurrently.
Erlan Jaqanūly Qoşanov, sometimes romanized as Yerlan Koshanov, is a Kazakh politician who is serving as the member and chairman of the Mäjilis since 2022. Prior to that, he served as the Aqorda Chief of Staff under Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's administration from 2019 to 2022, äkim of Karaganda Region from 2017 to 2019 and the head of the Prime Minister's Office from 2012 to 2017.
The Almaty Regional Mäslihat is a local unicameral legislature of the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan, located in Taldıqorğan which currently consists of 45 members. Founded in 1993, the current Secretary of the Mäslihat is Janbolat Jorgenbaev. Until 2021, all members of the legislature were elected through a secret ballot from every single member districts. For the first time after the 2021 Almaty regional election, the Mäslihat is composed of three political parties with Nur Otan controlling a supermajority of 37 seats.
The East Kazakhstan Regional Mäslihat is a unicameral local legislative body of the East Kazakhstan Region which convenes in Oskemen. It is composed of 38 members from three parties of Nur Otan (NO), Ak Zhol Democratic Party (AJ), and Auyl People's Democratic Patriotic Party (AUYL) whom are elected every five years through proportional representation. The current Mäslihat Secretary is Denis Rypakov (NO).
The acting president of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a temporary post provided by the Constitution of Kazakhstan. This role is assumed by an individual who fulfills the duties of the president of Kazakhstan in cases of incapacity or vacancy. However, the acting president is more limited in power, as they cannot propose constitutional amendments.
