Living in Darkness is the debut studio album by American punk rock band Agent Orange, released in 1981 on Posh Boy Records. The album showcased the band's innovative mixture of punk, surf rock [1] [2] and skate punk, and was also listed in the "10 Best Skate Punk Records of All Time". [3]

Contents

The original album consisted of eight tracks. In 1992, it was expanded to include three unreleased tracks from the album sessions ("Pipeline", "Breakdown" and "Mr. Moto") as well as the 1979 recordings that won them their Posh Boy contract ("Bloodstains", "America", "Bored of You" and "El Dorado"). A 1981 interview and liner notes written by guitarist Mike Palm were also included in the reissue. In 1988, Agent Orange recorded an as-yet unreleased version of the album, titled Living in Total Darkness.

Three songs are covers of classic surf instrumentals: "Pipeline" by the Chantays, "Miserlou" by Dick Dale and "Mr. Moto" by the Bel-Airs.

"Everything Turns Grey" was featured in the 2001 film Freddy Got Fingered , as well as the 2001 video game Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX . It was also covered by punk rock band Lagwagon for their fifth album Let's Talk About Feelings , and the song also appeared in the third episode of the season two of the TV show 13 Reasons Why. "Bored of You" was featured in the 2013 open world video game Grand Theft Auto V , on the Channel X punk rock radio station. [4] "Bloodstains" was featured in the skateboarding games Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Skate 3 . "No Such Thing" was featured in the skateboarding game Skate. [5] [6]

Surf music is a genre of rock music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Southern California. It was especially popular from 1958 to 1964 in two major forms. The first is instrumental surf, distinguished by reverb-heavy electric guitars played to evoke the sound of crashing waves, largely pioneered by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. The second is vocal surf, which took elements of the original surf sound and added vocal harmonies, a movement led by the Beach Boys.

Skate punk is a skater subculture and punk rock subgenre that developed in the 1980s. Since then, it has predominately featured fast tempos, lead guitar playing, fast drumming, and singing. Occasionally, skate punk also combines the fast tempos of hardcore punk and melodic hardcore with the catchy hooks of pop-punk.

Thoughts of Yesterday: 1981–1982 1987 compilation album by T.S.O.L.

Thoughts of Yesterday: 1981–1982 is a compilation album of early material by the American hardcore punk band T.S.O.L., released in 1987 by Posh Boy Records. It combines the band's two EPs, 1981's T.S.O.L. and 1982's Weathered Statues, as well as an early version of "Peace Thru' Power", a song that was re-recorded for their first full-length album Dance with Me (1981). The album's release stemmed from a dispute between T.S.O.L. and Posh Boy owner Robbie Fields that began when the band left Posh Boy after releasing T.S.O.L., moving to Frontier Records for Dance with Me. Fields maintained that the band owed his label another EP, and withheld royalties from them as a result. The dispute culminated in singer Jack Grisham punching Fields in the face. Several years later, after Grisham and drummer Todd Barnes had both left T.S.O.L., a settlement was negotiated in which the band members received back royalty payments and Posh Boy acquired the rights to Weathered Statues, originally released through Alternative Tentacles. Posh Boy combined the two EPs to create Thoughts of Yesterday.
