Lockwood South is a locality in the City of Greater Bendigo and Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. [5] [6] At the 2021 census, Lockwood South had a population of 1,052. [1]

History

The first school in Lockwood South was opened in 1859 and a Wesleyan Church was built in 1872 which is now a Uniting Church. [7] A public hall was built in the late nineteenth century and is still in use today. [8]

It is a part of the Heathcote wine region Wine District and a number of vineyards have been established in the area, most notably producing Shiraz grapes. Its local government areas are the City of Greater Bendigo and Shire of Mitchell, Mia Mia is part of the Federal Electorates of Bendigo and McEwen and it is in the state electorate of Euroa. In 2011, it had a population of 265.

The Calder Highway and the Midland Highway, which join to form the main route into Bendigo from Melbourne, pass through a prominent cutting in Big Hill as the southern gateway to Bendigo.
