Loon Lake was an indie rock band based in Melbourne, consisting of brothers Sam Nolan (lead vocals, guitar), Simon Nolan (guitar, vocals), and Nick Nolan (guitars, production), as well as Tim Lowe (bass), and Ricky (drums). [1]

The band released two EPs, 2011's Not Just Friends and 2012's Thirty Three, the latter of which saw single "Cherry Lips" peak at No. 19 [2] on the ARIA Australian Artists Singles Chart. In 2013, Loon Lake was named one of Triple J magazine's "50 Acts that Matter Right Now". The band released their debut album, Gloamer, on 11 October 2013. [3] They self-released their second and final studio album Low Res in October 2015.

The band announced in August 2015 that they would disband at the conclusion of their Final Wave Tour, which ended in November 2015. [4]

History

Background

The Nolan brothers grew up in Tarrawingee, a small town in Country Victoria, Australia. Nick Nolan is a lifelong friend of bassist Tim Lowe, who also grew up in Tarrawingee. Sam Nolan met guitarist Daniel Bull while traveling in Turkey. Sam came up with the band's name while reading E. L. Doctorow's Loon Lake in a Costa Rican café during his travels.

Loon Lake's early demos "Into the Office" and "Easy Chairs", recorded in Melbourne in 2011, were praised by the Australian blogosphere and by Triple J critics Richard Kings Mill and Zan Rowe for their "killer riffs, total heart, and down to earth stories." [5]

In 2011, Loon Lake toured with Girls, Kaiser Chiefs, Cage the Elephant, The Grates, Jebediah [6] and more. These support tours were followed by the band's first national headlining tour named the Not Just Friends tour, on which they sold out iconic Melbourne venues Northcote Social club [7] and Ding Dong Lounge. Not Just Friends EP (2011)

Loon Lake's first EP Not Just Friends was mixed by Robin Mae (Nick Cave, John Butler Trio) and released on 3 June 2011. "Easy Chairs" and "In the Summer", two of Not Just Friends' standout tracks, were placed into rotation on several Australian radio stations including RRR FM, FBI Radio Sydney, 4zzz Brisbane, and Triple J. Beat Magazine said of the EP, "Loon Lake's EP comprises six hook-laden tracks which explode with power pop guitars, off kilter vocals, and a couple of high notes here and there leaving a raw sincerity resonating from every infectious raucous riff." Thirty Three EP (2012)

The Thirty Three EP is best known for its second single "Cherry Lips", a song that became the band's highest charting single to date after reaching No. 29 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in early 2013, [10] and No. 5 on the Australian Independent Record Label Association's Independent Singles Chart. [11] The first single from Thirty Three, "Bad to Me", reached No. 2 on the AIR chart and No. 9 on the iTunes alternative chart. [12]

Faster Louder's Natalie Silvo said of the EP, "the execution and the underlying promises of unabashed fun ensures that that Loon Lake will provide a solid soundtrack to warmer days and nights." [13] The EP was also considered to be the band's most diverse effort to date, with Loon Lake guitarist Dan Bull saying in an interview with X-Press Magazine, "These songs are a result of us maybe finding our sound, and experimenting with different arrangements and styles." [14]

Loon Lake toured in support of this EP, playing many of Australia's marquee venues and even selling out the Corner Hotel two weeks beforehand. [15]

Gloamer (2013)

Loon Lake's first full-length album, Gloamer, was released via Caroline / Universal [16] on 11 October 2013. The album's title is derived from the word gloaming and describes someone coming to life during that strange and magical time of day after the sun goes down, but before darkness falls. [17] Two singles were released from Gloamer: "On Fire" on 1 March 2013, and "Carolina" on 16 August 2013. "City Lights", released in January 2013, was later included on the album.

They were joined a year later by Kevin's older brother, Brett Mitchell, on drums. After winning the National Campus Band Competition, the group were brought to national attention when their 1996 single "Jerks of Attention" received heavy airplay on Australian alternative radio station Triple J – which was followed by their breakthrough debut album, Slightly Odway.

The Living End

The Living End are an Australian punk rockabilly band from Melbourne, formed in 1994. Since 2002, the line-up consists of Chris Cheney, Scott Owen, and Andy Strachan (drums). The band rose to fame in 1997 after the release of their EP Second Solution / Prisoner of Society, which peaked at No. 4 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. They have released eight studio albums, two of which reached the No. 1 spot on the ARIA Albums Chart: The Living End and State of Emergency. They have also achieved chart success in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Frente! Australian alternative rock band

Frente! were an Australian alternative rock and folk-pop group which originally formed in 1989. The original line-up consisted of Simon Austin on guitar and backing vocals, Angie Hart on lead vocals, Tim O'Connor on bass guitar, and Mark Picton on drums. In August 1991, they issued their debut extended play, Whirled, which included the track, "Labour of Love". In March 1992, they released a second EP, Clunk, with its featured track, "Ordinary Angels", which peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart. It was followed in October by "Accidently Kelly Street" which reached No. 4. Their debut album, Marvin the Album, issued in November, peaked at No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. "Labour of Love" was released as an EP outside of Australasia in 1994 as a CD single with a cover version of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" included. The Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane felt that the group's "quirky, irreverent, acoustic-based sound was at odds with the usual guitar-heavy, grunge trends of the day. The band's presentation had a tweeness about it that could have been off-putting if not for its genuine freshness and honesty".

Karnivool

Karnivool is an Australian progressive rock band formed in Perth in 1997. The group currently consists of Ian Kenny on vocals, Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking on guitar, Jon Stockman on bass, and Steve Judd on drums. Karnivool emerged from a band Kenny and Goddard formed during high school. They have released three studio albums to date.

The Drones (Australian band)

The Drones were an Australian rock band, formed in Perth by mainstay lead vocalist and guitarist Gareth Liddiard in 1997. Fiona Kitschin, his domestic partner, joined on bass guitar and vocals in 2002. Other long-term members include Rui Pereira on bass guitar and then lead guitar; Mike Noga on drums, vocals, harmonica and percussion; and Dan Luscombe on lead guitar, vocals and keyboards. Their second album, Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, won the inaugural Australian Music Prize. In October 2010 their third studio album, Gala Mill was listed at No. 21 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums. Two of their albums have reached the top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart, I See Seaweed and Feelin Kinda Free. The group went on hiatus in December 2016 with Kitschin and Liddiard forming a new group, Tropical Fuck Storm, in the following year.

Violent Soho Australian rock band

Violent Soho are an Australian alternative rock band that was formed in 2004 in the Brisbane suburb of Mansfield, Queensland. The band consists of Luke Boerdam, James Tidswell, Luke Henery and Michael Richards. Their sound has been compared to that of 1980s and 1990s alternative rock bands such as the Pixies, Mudhoney and Nirvana. Although being largely described as 'Grunge' the band is a self described 'Stoner Pop' band. The band's third studio album, Hungry Ghost, was certified Gold in Australia in September 2014. Their fourth album, Waco, debuted at number 1 on the Australian iTunes and ARIA charts in 2016. The band's fifth album, Everything Is A-OK, was released on 3 April 2020.

The Basics are an Australian band, formed by Wally De Backer and Kris Schroeder in 2002, later joined by Tim Heath. Their style has been described as anything from 'indie-pop' to 'rock'n'roll', though their records show they span a wide range of genres, including reggae, pop-rock, folk, country, and electro-pop. They are "recognised as one of Australia's hardest-working bands".

The Temper Trap Australian band

The Temper Trap are an Australian indie rock band formed in 2005 by Dougy Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne, and Toby Dundas. In 2008, the group relocated from Melbourne to London. The band released their debut album Conditions in June 2009 to favourable reviews and commercial success; it peaked at No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart and into the top 30 on the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, "Sweet Disposition", peaked in the top 10 on the Belgian, Irish and UK Singles Charts and reached No. 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 in November, The Temper Trap won Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for "Sweet Disposition". Their eponymous second album was released in late May/early June 2012 under Liberation Music (AUS), Infectious Records (UK) and Glassnote Records (US). The album won the band Best Rock Album, and they also won Best Group at the 2012 ARIA Awards. In October 2013 guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto left the band, during the recording of the third album.

Miami Horror

Miami Horror are an Australian electronic music group from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Miami Horror was initially formed by its producer and DJ, Benjamin Plant who began it as a solo project. In addition to Plant, the band features Josh Moriarty, Daniel Whitechurch (keyboards), and currently Rhythm Luna (drums), though they often feature different vocalists. The band takes influence from dance and rock artists of the 1970s and 1980s such as Prince, New Order, Todd Rundgren, and Pink Floyd, combining it with modern production techniques from styles such as house and pop music.

Papa vs Pretty

Papa vs Pretty was an Australian rock band from Sydney, New South Wales. Originally the solo act of then 15-year-old Thomas Rawle in 2006, Papa vs Pretty became a three-piece band in 2008 with the addition of Rawle's friends Angus Gardiner and Tom Myers, and a quartet in 2012 with the arrival of Luke Liang. On Monday 30 June 2014, the band announced their breakup.

Stonefield are an Australian rock band comprising the four Findlay sisters: Amy on drums and lead vocals, Hannah on lead guitar, Sarah on keyboards, and Holly on bass guitar. They were formed in 2006 as Iotah in Darraweit Guim, a small town in rural Victoria. They changed their name in 2010 and have released four studio albums, Stonefield, As Above, So Below — which peaked at No. 19 on the ARIA Albums Chart — Far from Earth and Bent.

San Cisco Australian indie pop band

San Cisco is an Australian indie pop band that formed in 2009 under the original name of King George, in Fremantle, Western Australia. The band are a three-piece, and currently consists of Jordi Davieson, Josh Biondillo and Scarlett Stevens. All members, except Stevens, share duties on keyboards. In November 2011, the band was signed by Albert Productions, but moved to Island Records for the release of its debut album. In October 2012, the band described its 'vibe' as "squelchy, crispy, streamlined, hairy, indie". At the ARIA Music Awards of 2013 the group were nominated for Best Independent Release and Best Dance Release for the album; and Best Video for "Fred Astaire", which was directed by Andrew Nowrojee.
