Lori Cohen Moseley is an American politician who served as Mayor of Miramar,Florida,from 1999 to 2015,as a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to her tenure as mayor she served on the city commission from 1995 to 1999.
Moseley was born in Brookline,Massachusetts,and educated at Syracuse University and the Wood Tobé–Coburn School. She became active in politics with her serving as a member of the Democratic Executive Committee in Broward County,Florida,and on an elementary school advisory board. She defeated incumbent commissioner Nick Sacco in the 1995 election and was elected as mayor in the 1999 election. She served as mayor until she was defeated by Wayne Messam in the 2015 election.
Lori Cohen Moseley was born Brookline,Massachusetts,to Albert and Edna Cohen and later moved to Miramar,Florida,in 1983. She attended Syracuse University form 1973 to 1975,and graduated from the Wood Tobé–Coburn School with an associates of arts degree in fashion merchandising in 1977. She married Kenneth Moseley,with whom she had two children. [2] [3] [4]
Moseley served as chair of the Fairway Elementary School's advisory board and as a member of the Democratic Executive Committee in Broward County,Florida. In 1994,Sandra Lucas,the vice-mayor of Mirmar,initially suggested that Moseley succeed Bob Rubin on the city's firefighters' pension fund board,but Lucas withdrew her nomination and the city commission voted five to zero in favor of reappointing Rubin. Moseley was instead appointed to serve on Miramar's planning and zoning board. [5] [2]
Moseley defeated Nick Sacco,an incumbent member of the city commission from the 4th district,in the 1995 election. [6] Mayor Vicki Coceano nominated Moseley to succeed Kevin Fernander as vice-mayor in 1998,but Moseley withdrew from consideration and Sandy Enos was selected instead. [7] [8] Marjorie Conlan was elected to succeed her in the 1999 election. [9]
Moseley initially sought reelection to the city commission,but ran for mayor following Coceano's retirement announcement and defeated Jim Cundiff,who had resigned from the city commission during the campaign,in the 1999 mayoral election and has raised three times the amount as Cundiff during the campaign. [10] [11] [12] [9] [13] She defeated Sallie L. Stephens,who had resigned from the city commission,in the 2003 election. [14] [15] She won reelection without opposition in 2007. [16] She defeated John Moore,a former city commissioner,in the 2011 election. [17] [18] Judy Stern,a lobbyist,served as Moseley's campaign manager. [19]
Wayne Messam,a member of the city commission,defeated Mosley in the 2015 mayoral election due to the increase in Miramar's black population which was now represented by an all-black city commission. [20]
Moseley appointed Robert Payton to serve as city manager in 2001,and he served until his resignation in 2013. [21] She opposed the development of strip malls,Target stores,and Walmart stores in Miramar. [22] [23] [24] She stated that Miramar couldn't "be a bricks and mortar city" and that the city needed "to have culture". [25] During her tenure as mayor the Ansin Sports Complex,a cultural arts center,a town center,and other projects were completed. [26]
Moseley signed onto the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement statement. [27] Moseley supported giving employment and housing protections to homosexuals in 2003. [28] Moseley signed onto the "Mayors for Freedom to Marry" statement which was in support of giving homosexual couples the right to marry. [29] [30]
Moseley led the Broward County charter review commission in 2006. [31] She served as president of the Broward League of Cities,which represented all thirty-one governments in Broward County. [32] She served as president of the Florida League of Mayors from 2012 to 2013. [33]
Moseley was appointed to serve on the city's nineteen-member charter review commission by Broward County commissioner Barbara Sharief after losing reelection as mayor. [34] During the 2018 gubernatorial election she endorsed Philip Levine for the Democratic nomination. [35]
