Lorna J. Waite, PhD (27 August 1964 - 12 August 2023), was a Scottish academic, community activist and poet who, like Robert Burns, also from Ayrshire, wrote in both English and Scots. [1] She had an awareness of social justice from her childhood and wrote poetry about the impact of the closure of heavy industry on communities in the West of Scotland. Waite researched post-industrial folk memory in a Wingate scholarship (2002) and as her PhD thesis, and in a children's novel. [1]
She was awarded a New Writer's Bursary by the Scottish Arts Council and a writer in residence placement at Hugh MacDiarmid's cottage at Brownsbank in the Scottish Borders (2011). Waite was a Jessie Kesson Fellow at Moniack Mhor (2012). Waite wrote about the Scots' love of football and about Gaelic culture, and was also an art critic involved with a number of publications including the radical magazine, Variant [2] and participated in a wide range of art events [3] in collaboration with artists and writers and local communities. [4]
Born Lorna Janet Waite in Kilwinning, and brought up in Kilbirnie in the industrial area of Ayrshire, in the West of Scotland. She attended Garnock Academy, and studied French, German and Latin, as well as the local bard, Robert Burns, whose Scots narrative poem Tam O'Shanter, she recited well at school. [4] At primary school, she visited New York, and was impressed by the United Nations building, and the idea of world peace, which later prompted her to join the campaign for nuclear disarmament (CND), and being arrested for protesting at Faslane. [4] She later advocated Scottish independence. [4] [5]
Waite was the first of her family to attend university, studying psychology at Edinburgh University and undertook a MSc with distinction in community education. Her doctoral thesis, at Duncan Jordanstone College of Art was titled 'Cultural retrieval, land use and post-industrial folk memory: a practice-led response to the destruction of Glengarnock Steelworks'. [1] Her children's novel Frances and The Blasties: Seven Steel Myths for Children was on this theme. Later she was to set up an art centre including people with special needs in Broxburn with ArtLink. [4]
When she was in her teens, the nearby Glengarnock Steelworks, [6] which made railway tracks, among other things, and was a major employer since the nineteenth century was finally closed down in 1985. [7]
The impact on the local communities around the steelworks as well as the deliberate destruction of archive materials relating to the work was core to her poetry, inncluding 56 poems in her book 'Steel Garden Poems' (2011) [4] [8] Her poetry was described by Canadian poet Valerie Gillies: "in supple Scots Lorna Waite creates a way of holding hands with history, a workers’ history that needed her to write it down.” [4]
Waite was a member of the Tartan Army of fans who follow the Scottish football team, contributing to a book of poetry, edited by Alec Finlay, Football Haiku'. [9] Her work appeared in the ''100 Favourite Scottish Football Poems', [10] edited by Alasdair Findlay, who also included Waite's poem 'The Ravens O’ Thingvellir' in a book of poetry he edited with Tessa Ransford, around the Scottish Independence Referendum (2015). [11] She reviewed the Radical Independence Conference as presenting the alternatives as 'fear and fear of fear'. [12]
As an art critic, Waite wrote for Variant and collaborated with Richard Demarco, including writing about their cultural visit with 30 artists, writers and teachers to Poland, including a visit to Auschwitz [1] She also worked with photographers Jo Spence and Maud Sulter, whose photography she had reviewed in 1996. [13] Waite had a strong interest in preserving the natural world, and linked with Alastair McIntosh and Vérène Nicholas at the Centre for Human Ecology. [4]
Another collaboration was in 2004, with Donald Urquhart, following her interest in astronomy, in making a model of the solar system in the landscape of West Lothian, following the eighteenth century work (the Kirkhill Pillar), by the Earl of Buchan, who founded the Society of Antiquaries. Waite presented her work to the society, titled To remain worthy of the land: the Earl of Buchan, the Kirkhill Pillar Project and the re-animation of Scottish cultural history.
She was learning Gaelic and edited, 'SealladhÀs Ùr AirEalain Na Gàidhelt Achd:Rethinking Highland Art which followed up an exhibition Uinneag dhan Àird an Iar: Ath-Lorg Ealain na Gàidhealtachd/ Window to the West: The Rediscovery of Highland Art, at the Edinburgh City Art Centre (2011), [14] and she often visited the Highlands on holidays and in her last days. [4]
On 21 October 2020, Waite was a key speakerat the virtual Scottish Transport & Industry Collections Knowledge Network (STICK) conference on the topic Cultural Retrieval: land use and postindustrial folk memory. [15]
In 2023, she wrote a poem in Scots on the Gaelic dictionary maker, Edward Dwelly, which was translated into Gaelic by Marcas Mac an Tuairnair (editor) and included in 'Cruinneachadh: A Gathering', [16] a
Gerda Stevenson said of Waite:
"Lorna was luminous, powerful, brave yet humble, with a touching vulnerability. A remarkable woman, whose being somehow embodied the cultural strata of this richly diverse small nation we inhabit, and whose work we should all know about." [1]
Lorna J. Waite died of cancer at home in Edinburgh on 12 August 2023, [4] and is survived by her husband, Professor Emeritus Murdo Macdonald. [1]

Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, legal name Alexander MacDonald, or, in Gaelic Alasdair MacDhòmhnaill, was a Scottish war poet, satirist, lexicographer, political writer and memoirist. The poet's Gaelic name means "Alasdair, son of the Reverend Alasdair". His father, also named Alasdair, was known as Maighstir Alasdair which was then the way of referring to a clergyman in Scottish Gaelic. In English, Maighstir Alasdair was known as the "Reverend Alexander MacDonald".
Kilbirnie is a small town of 7,280 inhabitants situated in the Garnock Valley area of North Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland. It is around 20 miles (30 km) southwest of Glasgow and approximately 10 miles from Paisley and 13 miles from Irvine respectively. Historically, the town's main industries were flax production and weaving before iron and steelmaking took over in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The suburb of Kilbirnie in the New Zealand capital of Wellington is named after the town.
Liz Lochhead Hon FRSE is a Scottish poet, playwright, translator and broadcaster. Between 2011 and 2016 she was the Makar, or National Poet of Scotland, and served as Poet Laureate for Glasgow between 2005 and 2011.
Glengarnock is a small village in North Ayrshire that lies near the west coast of Scotland. It forms part of the Garnock Valley area and is about 18 miles from Glasgow, the nearest city. The Barony of Glengarnock is one of three baronies which together form the parish of Kilbirnie in the district of Cunningham which lies in north Ayrshire. The River Garnock flows through the village, but the name Glen Garnock applies more specifically to the ravine at Glengarnock Castle, some 4 kilometres north of the village.
Rob Donn (1714–1778) was a Scottish Gaelic poet from Sutherland. It is generally assumed that his name was Robert Mackay (MacAoidh), but this has been disputed, so he is sometimes referred to as "Rob Donn MacAoidh".
Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir, anglicized as Duncan Ban MacIntyre, was one of the most renowned of Scottish Gaelic poets. He formed an integral part of one of the golden ages of Gaelic poetry in Scotland during the 18th century.
Scottish fiddling may be distinguished from other folk fiddling styles by its particular precision of execution and energy in the delivery, for example, the rendering of the dotted-quaver/semi-quaver rhythmic patterns, commonly used in the Strathspey. Christine Martin, in her Traditional Scottish Fiddling players guide, discusses the techniques of "hack bowing", "the Scotch snap", and "snap bowing". These techniques contrast quite sharply with the most common bowing patterns of Irish fiddling. The style has a very large repertoire consisting of a great variation of rhythms and key signatures. There is also a strong link to the playing of traditional Scottish bagpipes which is better known throughout the world.
Gabriel Rosenstock is an Irish writer who works chiefly in the Irish language. A member of Aosdána, he is poet, playwright, haikuist, tankaist, essayist, and author/translator of over 180 books, mostly in Irish. Born in Kilfinane, County Limerick, he currently resides in Dublin.

The Book of the Dean of Lismore is a Scottish manuscript, compiled in eastern Perthshire in the first half of the 16th century. The chief compiler, after whom it is named, was James MacGregor, vicar of Fortingall and titular Dean of Lismore Cathedral, although there are other probable scribes, including his brother Donnchadh and William Drummond, curate of Fortingall. It is unrelated to the similarly named Book of Lismore, an Irish manuscript from the early 15th century.

Scottish literature in the eighteenth century is literature written in Scotland or by Scottish writers in the eighteenth century. It includes literature written in English, Scottish Gaelic and Scots, in forms including poetry, drama and novels. After the Union in 1707 Scottish literature developed a distinct national identity. Allan Ramsay led a "vernacular revival", the trend for pastoral poetry and developed the Habbie stanza. He was part of a community of poets working in Scots and English who included William Hamilton of Gilbertfield, Robert Crawford, Alexander Ross, William Hamilton of Bangour, Alison Rutherford Cockburn, and James Thomson. The eighteenth century was also a period of innovation in Gaelic vernacular poetry. Major figures included Rob Donn Mackay, Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir, Uillean Ross and Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, who helped inspire a new form of nature poetry. James Macpherson was the first Scottish poet to gain an international reputation, claiming to have found poetry written by Ossian. Robert Burns is widely regarded as the national poet.
Màiri nighean Alasdair Ruaidh (c.1615–c.1707), also known as Mary Macleod, was a Scottish Gaelic poet.
In addition to English, literature has been written in a wide variety of other languages in Britain, that is the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. This includes literature in Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Latin, Cornish, Anglo-Norman, Guernésiais, Jèrriais, Manx, and Irish. Literature in Anglo-Saxon is treated as English literature and literature in Scots as Scottish literature.
