Students must apply to enter the school and the school accepts one-thirds of applicants. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1946.

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is an examination administered to eighth and ninth-grade students residing in New York City and used to determine admission to eight of the city's nine Specialized High Schools. An average of 25,000 students take the test to apply to these schools, and around 5,000 are accepted. The test is given each year in October and November, and students are informed of their results the following March. Those who receive offers decide by the middle of March whether to attend the school the following September. The test is independently produced and graded by American Guidance Service, a subsidiary of Pearson Education, under contract to the New York City Department of Education.

Infinity Institute is a public middle school / high school located in the Greenville section of Jersey City, in Hudson County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, serving students in sixth through twelfth grades as part of the Jersey City Public Schools. While it is a public school, students do have to apply for entrance. Applications must have multiple letters of recommendation, as well as impressive grades from the previous academic year. Middle school applicants take the OLSAT while high school applicants take the PSAT Both tests are deemed difficult, so a select few students are accepted annually. Only about fifty applicants are accepted for sixth grade, while only around ten make it into seventh grade annually. Out of all applicants that apply to grades six through twelfth, only about 10% of said applicants are accepted. Due to the schools competitiveness, it consistently ranks in the top 5% in New Jersey academically. The school was established in September 2010 under the Jersey City Board of Education.
The Academies of Loudoun (ACL) is a magnet school in Leesburg, Virginia. It is part of Loudoun County Public Schools, and houses three schools with a focus on STEM education: The Academy of Engineering and Technology (AET), The Academy of Science (AOS), and the Monroe Advanced Technical Academy (MATA). Students enrolled in the Academies of Loudoun attend the Academies every other school day, spending the remaining days at their non-magnet high school, determined by attendance zones. The Academies has an acceptance rate of 1.5%, making it one of the most competitive high school programs in the country. The Academies is located on a 119-acre wooded campus, and cost $125 million.
