The Academies of Loudoun (ACL) is a magnet school in Leesburg, Virginia. It is part of Loudoun County Public Schools. It houses three schools with a focus on STEM education, The Academy of Engineering and Technology (AET), The Academy of Science (AOS), and the Monroe Advanced Technical Academy (MATA). [2] [3] Students enrolled in the Academies of Loudoun attend the Academies every other school day, spending the remaining days at their non-magnet high school, determined by attendance zones. The Academies has an acceptance rate of 3%, and is a 4 year program, but also has a three, or two year program. AET has three pathways, Engineering, IT, or Entrepreneurship; Engineering and IT have a four year class plan, though Entrepreneurship has a two year plan, where you can then switch to a two year plan of either Engineering or IT. AET has you take three classes, Integrated Science, Integrated Math, and the class for the pathway chosen in no particular order. Integrated science covers both chemistry and physics, but not biology. Classes mostly work together with assignments to be related to your pathway. AOS has a four year plan that can not be changed and also has three classes. MATA has one class which is specialized to one of many single choices. All students share all of their classes with a group of the same students for the entire year or possibly all years depending on circumstance. The Academies has an advisory class once per month that is after lunch. It is located on a 119-acre wooded campus, and cost $125 million. [4] [3]

History

The Academies of Loudoun opened in the 2018–2019 school year. This brought the three pre-existing schools under the same roof. The Academy of Science was relocated from Dominion High School, the Academy of Engineering and Technology was relocated from Tuscarora High School (Virginia), [5] and the Monroe Advanced Technical Academy was rebranded from the C. S. Monroe Technology Center, known as Monroe Tech, and relocated from its building in Leesburg. [6]

Admissions Controversy

In 2019, the Loudoun NAACP filed a complaint that alleged African American students were denied opportunity to attend the Academies of Loudoun, based on their racial background. The Attorney General's office subsequently launched an investigation, and Virginia officials found that the Academies of Loudoun's admissions policies prevented qualified black and Hispanic students from being accepted. The Academies of Loudoun has since reviewed and modified their admission policies. [7]

Activities

Robotics Team

ACL RoboLoCo, the Academies' robotics team, participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition annually. In 2022, and 2023, they qualified for the FIRST Championship, colloquially known as "Worlds". [8]

Waxahachie Global High School is a high school in Waxahachie, Texas, founded in 2007 on the historic T.C. Wilemon campus. It is one of only 91 STEM academies in the state of Texas. It was additionally granted Early College High School status in 2009 through a partnership with Navarro College, allowing students to earn an associate degree along with their high school diploma. Recently, as of the start of the 2013-2014 school year, Global High made a partnership with UT Tyler for all the STEM-based college courses offered at Global. As a public charter school, students from Ellis County and surrounding areas can attend regardless of zoning. Many students commute from surrounding cities such as Waxahachie, Red Oak, Ennis, Maypearl, Midlothian, Palmer, Italy, Cedar Hill, and Desoto. In 2014, Waxahachie Global was named the "Best High School" by the U.S. News & World Report. Starting in the 2018-19 school year, the Global campus is located in the Billy R. Hancock Building.

Loudoun County, Virginia is divided into eight magisterial districts: Algonkian, Ashburn, Broad Run, Catoctin, Dulles, Leesburg, Little River, and Sterling. The magisterial districts each elect one supervisor to the Board of Supervisors which governs Loudoun County. There is also a Chair elected by the county at-large, bringing total Board membership to nine. Board members serve concurrent, four-year terms. A Vice Chair is selected by the Board from among its membership. The current Chair is Phyllis Randall and the current Vice Chair is Juli Briskman, the Algonkian District Supervisor. She has served as Vice Chair since January 2024. Salaries for the current Board term of 2024-2027 were set by the previous Board in January 2023.

It was part of the Loudoun County Public School system, and it is a Virginia Governor's STEM Academy. The school was named after Charles S. Monroe, a teacher and principal at Leesburg High School. The school closed in June 2018, however the programs and courses are now offered through the Academies of Loudoun, which opened in August 2018. Demolition of the building started at the beginning of February 2020.
