Loukman Ali (born 1 June 1990) is a Ugandan cinematographer, screenwriter, [1] film director, producer and graphic designer. His directorial debut was Monday [2] followed up by The Bad Mexican , [3] released in 2017.The film was nominated in various festival including the Amakula International film festival. His other major films include The Girl in the Yellow Jumper , The Blind Date and Sixteen Rounds. He is known to frequently working with actor Michael Wawuyo Jr. and filmmaker Usama Mukwaya.

Early life and background

After working as a graphics designer in Norway, Loukman returned to Uganda and ventured into advertising until he began doing films in 2014.

Film breakthrough

(2014–2020): The Girl in the Yellow Jumper

This is Loukman Ali's feature film debut. The film was initially to premiere on April 15, 2020, but was subsequently postponed due to COVID-19. The Film will however have its world premiere at the Urbanworld Film Festival during its 25 anniversary [4]

2021 – present: The Blind Date, Sixteen Rounds

In collaboration with filmmaker Usama Mukwaya, The Blind Date is the first of the three episodes meant to make an anthology of sorts. The short film features Martha Kay alongside Michael Wawuyo Jr. with Raymond Rushabiro who stars as former army man – Jacob alongside Riverdan Rugaaju, Patriq Nkakalukanyi and Allen Musumba. A follow-up episode titled Sixteen Rounds premiered on September 16, 2021. The 37 minutes short features Michael Wawuyo Jr. again and Natasha Sinayobye in leading roles. [5] Loukman announced in October that a feature-length film titled Ddamba based on the Sixteen Round's story is in the making. [6] [7]

The emerging film industry in Uganda is known as Ugawood or sometimes Kinauganda by the locals. The 2005 production Feelings Struggle directed by Ashraf Ssemwogerere is credited with being the first Ugawood film. It is Usama's first film under his film company O Studios Entertainment and is his first film as a writer, director and producer. The film premiered at the inaugural Mashariki African Film Festival and received a nomination for best short film.

The film had a special screening on 31 August 2017 at the Uganda Film Festival 2017. It had its official release on 4 January 2018.

Rehema is 2017 Ugandan film directed by Allan Manzi based upon a screenplay by Usama Mukwaya starring Juliet Zansaanze, Raymond Rushabiro and Ismael Ssesanga. The film premiered at the 38th Durban International Film Festival in South Africa. It held a special screening at the 4th Edition of the Euro-Uganda Film Festival on 17 June 2018 courtesy of the British Council.

Kyaddala is a Ugandan drama television series by Reach a Hand Uganda. The first season was produced by Emmanuel Ikubese Films and Reach a Hand Uganda. Set in a present day high school life, Kyaddala a Luganda word for "It's Real", focuses on real life social issues that affect young people across Africa and their attempts to overcome those issues. The series features actors and actresses from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria. Kyaddala premiered on 27 September 2019 at Kingdom Kampala.

The Girl in the Yellow Jumper is a Ugandan mystery-thriller produced and directed by Loukman Ali. It was announced that the film would premiere in Kampala on 18 April 2020. It follows a man who escapes a hostage situation only to find himself in deeper trouble. It stars Rehema Nanfuka, Philip Luswata, Michael Wawuyo Jr., Michael Wawuyo, Oyenbot and Maurice Kirya.

Jadesola Osiberu is a Nigerian writer, director and producer and founder of Greoh Studios. She is known for Isoken (2017), Sugar Rush (2019), Brotherhood (2022) and Gangs of Lagos, the first Nigerian original film set to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. In September 2022, Osiberu's Greoh Studios signed a three-year deal with Amazon to develop and produce original scripted TV series and feature films.

<i>The Blind Date</i> (film) Ugandan short film

The Blind Date is a 2021 Ugandan film written and directed by Loukman Ali starring Martha Kay, Michael Wawuyo Jr. and Raymond Rushabiro. The short film marks the second collaboration between Usama Mukwaya and Loukman Ali after Kyaddala TV Series which was released in 2019. The Blind Date is the first of the numerous episodes meant to make an anthology, with the follow-up episode already in the making. The film won Best short film at the 8th Uganda Film Festival awards. It had its African premiere at the 24th Zanzibar International Film Festival.

The iKon Awards - Film & Television is an awarding programme that recognizes and rewards implementers and personalities in the Film and Television and Mainstream Media in Uganda and ultimately, Africa. Founded by Humphrey Nabimanya, the new annual initiative is now presented by SAUTIplus Media Hub.

Stanlee Aideloje Ohikhuare known professionally as Stanlee Ohikhuare is a Nigerian filmmaker, cinematographer, and writer. He is known for producing short films. He obtained a diploma from a school of fine arts.

<i>Sixteen Rounds</i> Ugandan short film

Sixteen Rounds is a 2021 Ugandan film written and directed by Loukman Ali starring Michael Wawuyo Jr. and Natasha Sinayobye. The short film premiered on YouTube on September 16, 2021 and marks the second installment to The Blind Date, an anthology of short films between Usama Mukwaya and Loukman Ali. The film's sound track is designed by long time collaborator, Andrew Ahuura and features songs by Keneth Mugabi and Fred Masagazi.

The 2023 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards was held between 18 and 20 May 2023. The event included a series of pre-show activities with the actual award show held on 20 May 2023.
