Lower Pontnewydd railway station was a railway station in the village of Pontnewydd in Torfaen, South Wales, UK, originally opened by the Pontypool, Caerleon and Newport Railway. [1]
The station was opened as "Pontnewydd" by the Pontypool, Caerleon and Newport Railway on 21 December 1874. [2] [3] After a period of temporary closure between 1917 and 1919, the station was renamed "Lower Pontnewydd" on 1 July 1925 to distinguish it from Upper Pontnewydd to the west on the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal. [2] [3] The station closed to passengers on 9 June 1958, with the goods yard remaining in use until 25 January 1965. [4] [3] [5] [6]
The site was to the north of the overbridge on Station Road.[ citation needed ] It is now partially used as a caravan storage business.[ citation needed ] The twin track line remains in use.
When Cwmbran railway station was reopened by British Rail on 12 May 1986, [7] [8] it was at a site 300m to the south of Lower Pontnewydd.[ citation needed ] The former station is on the Welsh Marches Line.

There have been many railway stations in Newport, due to its importance as a port for the industrial Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire valleys. The only stations in use at the moment are Newport in the city centre and in the Western valley Pye Corner and Rogerstone.
Cwmbran railway station is in the northeast of Cwmbran town centre, within five minutes' walking distance. It is part of the British railway system owned by Network Rail and is managed by Transport for Wales, who operate all trains serving it. It lies on the Welsh Marches Line from Newport to Hereford. The station was opened at this site in 1986 to serve the commuter route to Newport and Cardiff, and shoppers to the town centre.
Aberbeeg railway station served the village of Aberbeeg in Monmouthshire, Wales. It was the junction where the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company's lines from Newport to Brynmawr and Ebbw Vale diverged.
The Pontypool, Caerleon & Newport Railway was promoted independently to relieve congestion on the heavily worked Eastern Valley Line of the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company. The Great Western Railway put up half the capital, making it in effect a GWR subsidiary. It opened in 1874, and most long-distance passenger and goods traffic, especially the heavy mineral traffic, transferred to it. It amalgamated with the GWR in 1876.
