History

MG JW Automobile Pakistan is owned by JW Auto Park, which in turn owned by Javed Afridi. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor to bring electric vehicles in Pakistan. It will establish Electric car manufacturing plant. MG Motors has launched two models namely MG HS, MG ZS and MG ZS EV in Pakistan in 2020. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Board of Investment (BoI) has approved the MG JW Automobile Pakistan Pvt Ltd to manufacture electric vehicles in country’s first private Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Raiwind. [10] [11]

Operations in Pakistan

MG Motors in Pakistan faced a delay in spare parts supply, which led to a backlog of customer orders and potential production disruptions. According to a report, the company was taking measures to address the issue, including working with its suppliers and expediting shipments. However, some customers experienced significant delays in receiving their orders, which could have negatively impacted the company's reputation and sales figures. [12]

In 2021, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) investigated MG Motors in Pakistan for under-invoicing vehicles to evade taxes. The investigation was launched in response to a complaint from a customs clearing agent, who claimed that the company was involved in fraudulent practices. The FBR conducted a thorough investigation and found evidence of under-invoicing, resulting in the imposition of heavy fines and penalties on the company. MG Motors denied any wrongdoing and stated that they were committed to following all relevant laws and regulations. [13]

In the beginning of 2023, The retail price of MG Essence increased by 19% in Pakistan due to an increase in custom duties. [14]

The automotive industry in Pakistan is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, growing by 171% between 2014 and 2018. It accounts for 4% of Pakistan's GDP and employed a workforce of over 3.5 million people as of 2018. Pakistan is the 35th largest producer of automobiles. Its contribution to the national exchequer is nearly Rs. 50-billion. Pakistan's auto market is among the smallest but fastest growing in Asia. 269,792 cars were sold in 2018, but this number declined to 186,716 in 2019 due to austerity measures. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Pakistan had many Japanese cars. With the launch of the first Auto Policy in 2005, Pakistan launched its first indigenous car, Adam Revo. However, after the 2008 elections, the dollar started depreciating, and due to bad governance, many automakers began to halt production, with some exiting Pakistan. Currently, the auto market is dominated by Honda, Toyota, and Suzuki. However, on 19 March 2016, Pakistan passed a second "Auto Policy 2016-21," which offers tax incentives to new automakers to establish manufacturing plants in the country. In response, Renault, Nissan, Proton Holdings, Kia, SsangYong, Volkswagen, FAW, and Hyundai have expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor, to bring electric vehicles to Pakistan. NLC signed an agreement with Mercedes Benz to manufacture Mercedes Actros trucks in Pakistan. Pakistan has not enforced any automotive safety standards or model upgrade policies. A few older vehicle models, including the Bolan and Ravi, continue to be sold by Suzuki. On 8 July 2021, Jolta Electric launched the production of electric motorcycles.

Pakistan already has a significant market for hybrid vehicles with Honda's Vezel, Toyota's Prius, and Aqua, and other models seen on the roads. The Automotive Development Policy (2016–2021) and the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) are encouraging foreign investments for new automobile brands to enter Pakistani market, while the leading manufacturers in the automobile industry in Pakistan are interested in introducing electric vehicle (EV) models with a wide range of prices which target consumers of diverse income groups. Several members of the international automobile industry including South Korea, China, and Japan also believe that Pakistan has a high potential market for EV technology, and local businesses are collaborating with them to bring EVs to Pakistan.

Subcompact crossover SUVs are usually based on a platform of a subcompact passenger car, although some high-end subcompact crossover models are based on a compact car (C-segment). The segment started to gain traction during early to mid-2010s when the number of models and sales figures rapidly increased in major markets such as North America and Europe. In 2019, around 22 percent of SUV global sales were contributed by subcompact crossovers.

MG Motor India Private Limited is an automobile manufacturer in India, a subsidiary of Shanghai-based Chinese automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor which markets vehicles under the British MG marque.
