History

MG JW Automobile Pakistan is owned by SAIC Motords China (51%) and JW Group Pakistan (49%)]]. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor China to bring ICE, PHEV and EV cars in Pakistan. It has established state of the art assembling plant for ICE and PHEV manufacturing in Lahore. MG Motors has launched two models namely MG HS, MG ZS and MG ZS EV in Pakistan in 2020. JW-SEZ Raiwind

Board of Investment (BoI) has approved the MG JW Automobile Pakistan Pvt Ltd to manufacture electric vehicles in country’s first private Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Raiwind. [10] [11]

Operations in Pakistan

MG Motors in Pakistan faced a delay in spare parts supply, which led to a backlog of customer orders and potential production disruptions. According to a report, the company was taking measures to address the issue, including working with its suppliers and expediting shipments. However, some customers experienced significant delays in receiving their orders, which could have negatively impacted the company's reputation and sales figures. [12]

In 2021, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) investigated MG Motors in Pakistan for under-invoicing vehicles to evade taxes. The investigation was launched in response to a complaint from its competitive, most probably Indus Motors, which claimed that the company was involved in fraudulent practices. The FBR conducted a thorough investigation and found NO evidence of under-invoicing. MG Motors had already denied any wrongdoing and stated that they were committed to following all relevant laws and regulations. [13]

In the beginning of 2023, The retail price of MG Essence increased by 19% in Pakistan due to an increase in custom duties. [14]

The automotive industry in Pakistan is one of fastest-growing industries in the country, growing by 171% between 2014 and 2018. It accounts for 7% of Pakistan's GDP and employed a workforce of over 6.8 million people as of 2024. Pakistan is the 15th largest producer of automobiles. Its contribution to the national exchequer is nearly US$5.4 billion. Pakistan's auto market is among the fastest growing in Asia. 384,000 cars were sold in 2023. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Pakistan had many Japanese cars. With the launch of the first Auto Policy in 2005, Pakistan launched its first indigenous car, Adam Revo. However, after the 2008 elections, the dollar started depreciating, and due to bad governance, many automakers began to halt production, with some exiting Pakistan. Currently, the auto market is dominated by Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki. However, on 19 March 2016, Pakistan passed a second "Auto Policy 2016-21," which offers tax incentives to new automakers to establish manufacturing plants in the country. In response, Renault, Nissan, Proton Holdings, Kia, SsangYong, Volkswagen, FAW, and Hyundai have expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor, to bring electric vehicles to Pakistan. NLC signed an agreement with Mercedes-Benz to manufacture Mercedes Actros trucks in Pakistan. On 8 July 2021, Jolta Electric launched the production of electric motorcycles.

MG Motor is an automotive brand owned by SAIC Motor, a Chinese state-owned carmaker based in Shanghai. It is a continuation of the original MG marque, a British brand founded in Oxford, UK, in 1924. SAIC Motor gained control of the brand in December 2007 by acquiring Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC), which had initially taken over the brand from the defunct MG Rover Group in 2005. Currently, MG operates as a division within SAIC's passenger vehicle branch.

Pakistan has a significant market for hybrid vehicles such as Honda's Vezel, Toyota's Prius, and Aqua. The Automotive Development Policy (2016–2021) and the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) encourage foreign investments for new automobile brands to enter the Pakistani market.

The MG HS is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC Motor under the British MG marque. The vehicle was launched in 2018, replacing the MG GS. In MG's global line-up, the HS is positioned above the subcompact ZS. The second generation HS was launched in 2024 as a rebranded and redesigned version of the Chinese market second generation Roewe RX5.
