The MV Akdeniz was a 1955 built Turkish passenger ship that served on both ferry and cruise voyages for the Turkish Maritime Lines until she became a student accommodation and training ship in Tuzla, Istanbul Province for the Maritime Technology branch of the Istanbul Technical University. Ms Akdeniz never served as a ferry. It was built as a combi ship, for carrying passengers and cargo as well.
The Akdeniz was the first of two near identical sister ships launched in 1955 for Northern and Southern Mediterranean ferry service, the other being the MV Karadeniz. She operated this service until 1960, when she was transferred to the Istanbul to Izmir and Black Sea Express routes. After this, she would go on back-to-back 25-day ferry voyages, beginning in Istanbul and ending in Barcelona, Spain with several stops along the way. She continued this uneventfully until 1980, when the Akdeniz and her sister went through a refit that saw them become one class ships. Later in the early 1980s Turkish Maritime decided to end their ferry services, so Akdeniz started Turkish coastal cruises out of Istanbul in the early 1980s. [1] In 1984 a boiler explosion on board the MV Karadeniz deemed her unfit for further operational service, so she was beached and scrapped at Aliağa in 1987. Despite this setback the Akdeniz became extremely popular and heavily adored by the Turkish public, and because of this her owners decided it was time for a modernization. In 1989 she entered dry dock for another refit, which saw the installation of air conditioning, a disco, gym and sauna. This minor rebuilding also had her passenger capacity reduced down to 314. [2] The Akdeniz was subsequently chartered to the German company Phoenix Seereisen for several years in the 1990s. In 1997 the Istanbul Technical University began to search for a suitable training and accommodation vessel for their maritime faculty. It was found that the Akdeniz was the most suitable ship for the job, and Turkish Maritime handed her over to the university in July 1997.
The ship began service with the university in 1998. She remained at anchor in Tuzla, Istanbul until 2006, during which time she survived several harsh storms. [3] Her funnel has been repainted from the classic Turkish Maritime logo to blue; much of her original structure remains, as her superstructure has not been altered in any way over her 55 years of service. The future of the Akdeniz is uncertain since costs to maintain her are very high, but the Faculty of Maritime currently has great interest in preserving the ship for future generations, as an emergency accommodation or hospital ship or a hotel and museum in either Turkey, where she operated, or Germany, where she was built. Due to heavy maintenance costs caused by strong corrosion, sold to shipbreakers in Aliaga in September 2015.
Ocean Countess was a cruise ship owned by Majestic International Cruises of Greece. She was completed in 1976 as Cunard Countess for Cunard Line and was a popular ship in the Caribbean cruise market for 20 years. After leaving Cunard service in 1996, she had a number of owners before being purchased by Majestic in 2004. She was retired in 2012 and scrapped in 2014 after a fire destroyed the ship.
MS Pride of Dover was a cross-channel ferry built-in 1987 for Townsend Thoresen. One of two 'Chunnel Beater' ships she primarily operated on the Dover – Calais route alongside her sister ship the Pride of Calais for P&O Ferries Ferries until 2010.
The MV Discovery was a cruise ship, which was formerly operated by Voyages of Discovery and was last in service for Cruise & Maritime Voyages. She was scrapped in Alang, India as Amen in 2014.
MV Gemini is a cruise ship operated by Miray Cruises since 2019. She was built in 1992 by Unión Naval de Levante, Valencia, Spain for Crown Cruise Line as Crown Jewel. She has also sailed under the name Cunard Crown Jewel. She also operated as SuperStar Gemini for Star Cruises from 1995 to 2008.
The Royal Viking Line was a luxury cruise line that operated from 1972 until 1998. The company was the brainchild of Warren Titus and had its headquarters at One Embarcadero Center in San Francisco.
MV Aegean Odyssey is a cruise ship owned and operated by Voyages to Antiquity, a one-ship cruise company established in 2009. Built as a ferry in 1973, it was converted to a cruise ship in 1988, and substantially rebuilt in 2010.
The MV Ocean Life was a cruise ship for a number of cruise lines, including Hellenic Seaways and Blue Ocean Cruises, under a number of names. She was sold for scrap in 2014.
MV Kungsholm was built in 1966 by the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland as a combined ocean liner / cruise ship for the Swedish American Line. She was later rebuilt as a full-time cruise ship sailing under the names MVSea Princess, MVVictoria, MV Oceanic II. and MV Mona Lisa. In September 2010 she was retired from service as she did not fulfill requirements to SOLAS 2010, becoming the floating hotel Veronica, before being scrapped in 2016.
MV Jupiter was a passenger and vehicle ferry in the fleet of Caledonian MacBrayne in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. She was the oldest of three "streakers" and the third River Clyde ship to bear the name 'Jupiter'. Her open car deck was accessible by stern and side ramps ro-ro. She entered service in 1974, and operated the Gourock to Dunoon crossing for much of her career. In 2006, she became the oldest vessel in the CalMac fleet and continued in service with them until 2010. Jupiter was sold for breaking in 2011.
MV Boudicca was a Royal Viking Star-class cruise ship that last served as accommodation vessel at Pendik, near Tuzla Shipyard. She was built in 1973 by Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard, Finland as Royal Viking Sky for Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap, Trondheim, which placed the ship in Royal Viking Line service. In May 2021 the ship was beached in Aliağa, Turkey, for scrapping.
RML 497 is a former Royal Navy Fairmile B motor launch from World War II. She was named Western Lady III on her entry to civilian service, as a passenger motor vessel for Western Lady Ferry Service. From 2009 to 2015, she operated as The Fairmile for Greenway Ferry on their day cruise route from Torquay and Brixham to Dartmouth and Greenway. In May 2013, she was returned to her original wartime appearance. Torbay's "ferry wars" forced her removal from service, and in December 2015, RML 497 was acquired by the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
MV Cunard Adventurer was a cruise ship built for the Cunard Line and operated from 1971 to 1977. She was the first of the company's vessels in the 20th century to bear a name that did not end in "ia" or begin with "Queen."
Avrasya was a Ro-Ro ferry that was hijacked in the Black Sea hostage crisis of 1996. Originally built in 1953 as the passenger ship Lazio, she was converted to a Ro-Ro ferry in 1967. In 1979, she was sold to Greece and renamed Sant Andrea. A sale in 1984 saw her renamed Makedonia, followed by a chartering in 1985 which saw her renamed Summer Star. A sale in 1986 saw her renamed Corfu Diamond and after a further sale in 1988 she was renamed Larnaca Rose. In 1992, she was sold to Panama and was renamed Avrasya. Following the hijacking incident, she was renamed Cortina, then Avrasya I in 1997. She was sold for scrapping in November 1997.
The MV Karadeniz Powership Doğan Bey is a Liberia-flagged Powership, a floating power plant, owned and operated by Karpowership. Built 1983 by Mitsui Co. in Ichihara, Chiba, Japan and christened MV Sono, she sailed as a dry cargo ship under various names and flags until in 2010 she was converted into a Powership at the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey. She supplied electricity to the power grid in south-eastern Iraq. Currently, she supplies electricity to Sierra Leone.
The TEV Rangatira was a roll-on/roll-off vehicle and passenger ferry launched in 1971 for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. She was the world's last surviving passenger ship with steam-powered turbo-electric transmission.
Cambridge Ferry was a 3,294 GRT train ferry that was built in 1963 for the British Railways Board. She was sold to Malta in 1992 and renamed Ita Uno. She was renamed Sirio in 1993 and reflagged to Panama in 1998. The ship was scrapped in Turkey in 2003.

Built in 1984 by the Valmet Oy Helsingin Telakka in Vuosaari, Helsinki, Finland and christened MV Pavel Antokolsky, she sailed as a barge carrier under various names and flags until in 2015 she was converted into a Powership at the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey. She is commissioned to supply electricity to the power grid in Amurang, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The MV Karadeniz Powership Onur Sultan is a Liberia-flagged floating power plant, owned and operated by Karpowership. In 2016, she was sent off from the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey to Myanmar to supply electricity to the power grid. In 2018, she was commissioned to supply electricity to the power grid in Indonesia.
The MV Karadeniz Powership Gökhan Bey is Liberia-flagged floating power plant, owned and operated by Karpowership. In 2016, she was solemnly sent off from the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey together with the MV Karadeniz Powership Yasin Bey to Indonesia to supply electricity to the power grid. She has a generation capacity of 125 MW.
