MV Aratika was a roll-on/roll-off train ferry that operated on the Interislander between Wellington and Picton in New Zealand from 1974 until 1999.
According to the Ministry for Culture & Heritage, Aratika is a Māori-language word meaning direct path. [1]
Aratika was built by Chantiers Dubigeon in France for the New Zealand Railways Department to operate between Wellington and Picton. [2] She was built to carry rail freight only. [3] Launched in November 1973, the ship arrived in Wellington in June 1974. [4] [5] [6]
In 1976 she was converted by Hongkong United Dockyards to carry passengers and private vehicles as well as railway wagons. [7] This increased her passenger capacity from 10 to 840, and the car space from four to 70. [8]
During her 25 years of service, the vessel completed 27,265 crossings and traveled an overall distance of 1,400,000 miles (2,300,000 km).
In 1999, she was sold to MBRS Lines in the Philippines and served as MV Virgin Mary until 2008, when she was sold to Indian ship-breakers. [9]
Transport in New Zealand, with its mountainous topography and a relatively small population mostly located near its long coastline, has always faced many challenges. Before Europeans arrived, Māori either walked or used watercraft on rivers or along the coasts. Picton is a town in the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. The town is located near the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui, 25 km (16 mi) north of Blenheim and 65 km (40 mi) west of Wellington. Waikawa lies just north-east of Picton and is considered to be a contiguous part of the Picton urban area.

DEV Aratere is a roll-on/roll-off rail and vehicle ferry operated by KiwiRail in New Zealand. Built in 1998 for the then private company Tranz Rail and lengthened in 2011, she operates four daily crossings on the "Interislander" service across Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton each day.

It is owned and operated by state-owned rail operator KiwiRail. Three roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessels operate the 50-nautical-mile route, taking about three hours to complete the crossing.
The New Zealand Railways Department, NZR or NZGR and often known as the "Railways", was a government department charged with owning and maintaining New Zealand's railway infrastructure and operating the railway system. The Picton Express was a passenger express train operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) between Christchurch and Picton. It ran from December 1945 until February 1956, and was thus the shortest-lived provincial express in New Zealand. Following the end of railcar services in 1976, a new carriage train between Christchurch and Picton began, under the same name as the earlier service, until it was replaced in 1988 by the Coastal Pacific Express.

MV Αrmenistis is a ferry in service in Greece. She was built in 1971 as Anderida for Stena Line, serving under charter with Sealink until 1980. She then served under the names Truck Trader, Sealink and Mirela before she was sold to the Coopérative de Transport Maritime et Aérien (CTMA) in 1986 and renamed C.T.M.A. Voyageur. In January 2020 it was announced that the ship was sold to the Greek company Ainaftis. Her new name is Armenistis.
Great Journeys New Zealand is the tourism division of KiwiRail that operate its three Scenic train services. The new division was launched in May 2017 and replaced the former tourism brand KiwiRail Scenic Journeys. It has continuity with the earlier InterCity Rail (1987–1995) and Tranz Scenic (1995–2011).
