M for Malaysia is a 2019 Malaysian documentary film directed by Dian Lee and Ineza Rousille. [1] It documents the 2018 Malaysian general election. It is released on 12 September 2019 in Malaysia. [2] It was selected as the Malaysian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. [3]

Synopsis

The film documents the 14th general elections (GE14) in May 2018, from campaigning to election night, which saw historic moments as Pakatan Harapan took over the government and Mahathir Mohamad becoming prime minister for the second time.

The film touches on the corruption of Najib Razak; Mahathir Mohamad's personal life and family. It features interviews of several politicians including Wan Azizah and Lim Guan Eng.

The film is the directorial debut of Dian Lee and Ineza Rousille. One of the directors, Ineza Roussille is Mahathir Mohamad's granddaughter. [2]

Release and reception

M for Malaysia was released on September 12, 2019 in Malaysia. [4] Prior to its Malaysian theatrical release, the film was screened at the CAAM Festival 2019 in San Francisco and DocEdge Film Festival 2019 in New Zealand and will be screened at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in October. [5]

In critic reviews, Lowyat.net states that the film is mostly without bias and not a propaganda film. [6] [7]

The "Kajang Move" was a political manoeuvre attempted in Malaysia in 2014. The Alliance of Hope is a Malaysian political coalition consisting of centre-left political parties which was formed in 2015 to succeed the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. The installation of Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the sixteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia took place in a Malay Royal Ceremony at the Balairong Seri, Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, 30 July 2019 at 10 a.m. He was elected earlier by the Malay Rulers in the 251st Special Meeting of Conference of Rulers which was held at Istana Negara on 24 January 2019. The meeting was held upon the resignation of the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Muhammad V of Kelantan who stepped down from his post on 6 January 2019. Abdullah will hold the position for a period of 5 years beginning on 31 January 2019.
