Astro Shaw Sdn Bhd (stylised as astro SHAW) is a Malaysian film studio that has produced films for the local and regional markets and is pursuing expansion into international film investments. It also provides a marketing and distribution services for theatrical and non-theatrical release in Malaysia and abroad.
Astro Shaw has produced 5 of the top 10 highest grossing local films of all time in Malaysia. Astro Shaw's production Hantu Kak Limah shattered the record of Malaysia's box office being the first local film to achieve a box office collection of over RM30 million. In 2018, Astro Shaw achieved a box office collection of over RM100 million with the combination of successful films such as Dukun, Paskal, Hantu Kak Limah and Polis Evo 2 .[ citation needed ]
Astro Shaw distributed and marketed the 2019 kids animation film BoBoiBoy Movie 2 . After 3 years, Astro Shaw co-produced Mechamato Movie which got the success of the box office of RM35.88 million in Malaysia.
Sheriff become Astro Shaw's number one box office in Malaysia by collecting RM64 million in 8 weeks following by Polis Evo 3 , Hantu Kak Limah , Mechamato Movie, PASKAL: The Movie and MALBATT: Misi Bakara.
Established in 1996 under the Astro Shaw and Tayangan Unggul brand, its initial focus was to enhance the film industry in Malaysia through high quality production and compelling storytelling. Astro Shaw produced its first film Nafas Cinta in 1998. The movie starred Awie and received a great reception when released in cinemas. Nafas Cinta paved the way for Astro Shaw to expand its film production efforts and since 2001, Astro Shaw has released over 80 films. In 2010, Astro Shaw further expanded its reach by producing its first Chinese language film Woohoo. Since, Astro Shaw has release 5 more Chinese language films including The Journey.
In 2014, Maindhan became Astro Shaw's first Tamil-language Malaysian film. The film had a limited release on 9 August 2014 in Malaysia, Singapore, and Tamil Nadu. It emerged as the highest grossing locally produced Tamil film of all time before being beaten by Vedigundu Pasangge in 2018 which was co-produced by Astro Shaw.[ citation needed ]
From 2010 to 2013, top grossing Malaysian movies only averaged around RM8 million in the local box office. Astro Shaw defied all odds and raised the benchmark for local films in 2014, breaking the RM15 million mark with The Journey (RM17.28 million). The Journey was the first Chinese language film to top the local box office for its respective release year, a feat no other production company has been able to achieve. [1] In 2015, Astro Shaw once again breaking the record of box office in Malaysia when Polis Evo directed by Ghaz Abu Bakar and produced by Joel Soh received RM17.74 million only in Malaysia.
By achieving RM36.6 million with Hantu Kak Limah , it became the first local film to surpass the RM30 million gross box office (GBO). [2]
Polis Evo 3 become Astro Shaw's most successful film in box office when collected RM54 million in 11 weeks. [3]
Astro Shaw produced its first award-winning film KL Menjerit in 2003. The film won in 8 categories for the 16th Malaysia Film Festival including Best Film and 2 categories during the TV3 Screen Awards.[ citation needed ]
Following from the success of KL Menjerit, Astro Shaw has gone on to win over 170 awards from local and foreign film festivals.[ citation needed ] The Journey won best film in the KL Film Critics Awards and Best Non-Malay Language Local Film and the special Jury Award at the 2014 Malaysia Film Festival. The Journey and Ola Bola were selected to compete in the Far East Film Festival.[ citation needed ]
The White Girl (2017), a Hong-Kong film co-directed by Christopher Doyle and Jenny Suen and Astro Shaw's first foray into North Asian films, competed at the 2017 London Film Festival.
Other than that, Astro Shaw's film The Garden of Evening Mists due to release in January 2020, was nominated in 9 categories for the 56th Golden Horse Awards and won for best Makeup & Costume Design.
In 2022, Astro Shaw invest in 5 Indonesia films such as Ben & Jody, Keluarga Cemara 2, Stealing Raden Saleh , [4] Jagat Arwah and Qodrat . Those movies receive well here in Malaysia as well as Indonesia because of quality that put on the films. This improve the relationship of Malaysia and Indonesia on filmmaking.
Astro Shaw has since ventured beyond film production and is a film distribution and marketing partner in Malaysia and internationally. One of them is KL Special Force directed by Syafiq Yusof when Astro Shaw been chosen to become the marketer of the film. The 2019 children's film, BoBoiBoy Movie 2 was distributed and marketed by Astro Shaw successfully.
In 2022, Astro Shaw collaborated with Visinema Pictures from Indonesia for expanding the production of films together. In conjunction with that, they produced 4 films in the same year. [5]
After the box office success, they have been trust again to produce together for the first time ever for animated films, distributed and marketed 2022 film Mechamato Movie who got the title of 'The Most Successful Box Office Malaysian Animation Film' with the collection of RM35.88 million. [6]
They become the main producer of children film Didi & Friends The Movie together with Warnakala Studios and Digital Durian. [7]
Astro Shaw become one of the producers for one of the most expensive Malaysian film, MALBATT: Misi Bakara together with Berjaya Pictures, ACT 2 Pictures, Fast Bikes, Aurum Investments Limited and Golden Screen Cinemas directed by Adrian Teh with the budget cost of RM20 million. [8]
Astro Shaw for the second time distributed animated film without production for the first time in five years for Dongeng Sang Kancil produced by Les' Copaque Production. [9]
By leveraging existing regional and international partner relationships, Astro Shaw always continues its efforts to find new markets that have the potential to distribute local films as well as pave the way for international films to enter the Malaysian market.
Astro Shaw leads the front line in grooming storytelling by local talent through the formation of its own writers led by Anwari Ashraf. The goal of the team members is focused on the development of stories and ideas from the creativity of local talent and the quest to produce interesting stories not only suitable for local viewing, but also international. Some movies that written full by Writers' Room such as Pusaka and Rahsia. Both of those films were produced mainly by Astro Shaw.

Kadokawa Gempak Starz is a Malaysian graphic novel, comics and manga publisher owned by Kadokawa Corporation. Originally established as Komik Lawak Atau Lawak Creation in 1971, the company previously produced Gempak, a magazine dedicated to showcasing local comic artists from Malaysia to wider audiences. Gempak has the distinction of being the first Malaysian info-comic magazine, offering news and articles about the ACG world in and outside of the country. Gempak magazine aims to encourage the local development of such industries, facilitating the global spread of Malaysian talent.
Animation in Malaysia has origins in the puppetry style of wayang kulit, wherein the characters are controlled by the puppeteer, or Tok Dalang. The art of shadow play inspired German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger to create the animated The Adventures of Prince Achmed in 1926 that was based on one of the stories in the 1001 Nights. Many of the world's animators have credited Prince Achmed's recognisable style for generating their initial interest in animation as well as in their works.
Polis Evo is a 2015 Malaysian buddy cop action comedy film directed by Ghaz Abu Bakar and written by Joel Soh, Kyle Goonting, Anwari Ashraf and Adib Zaini. The film casts includes Shaheizy Sam, Zizan Razak, Nora Danish, Mimi Ernida, Hushairy Hussein and Pablo Amirul. The film tells the story of two police officers, Inspector Khai and Inspector Sani who have very different personalities but are forced to work together to bring down a drug trafficking operation. The film was released theatrically on September 17, 2015, nationwide.

Mohd Nizam Abdul Razak is a Malaysian animator. He is best known as the creator and director of Malaysian animated series, BoBoiBoy and its franchise. He is one of the co-founders and Managing Director of Animonsta Studios, which is based in Cyberjaya. He is a graduate of Multimedia University, majoring in Film and Animation.
Munafik 2 is a 2018 Malaysian Malay-language supernatural horror film directed and written by Syamsul Yusof. A sequel to Munafik (2016) and the second instalment in a planned Munafik trilogy, the film stars Syamsul himself, Fizz Fairuz, Maya Karin, Nasir Bilal Khan, Fauzi Nawawi, Mawi, Rahim Razali and Indonesian actress, Weni Panca.
Hantu Kak Limah or known as Hantu Kak Limah 3 is a 2018 Malaysian Malay-language horror comedy film directed by Mamat Khalid starring Awie, Zul Ariffin, Uqasha Senrose, Delimawati, TJ Isa and Sharwani NS. It is a sequel to Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah (2010) and Husin, Mon dan Jin Pakai Toncit (2013) as well as the third and final film in Hantu Kak Limah film series. The film was released on August 9, 2018 and became a commercial success.
Polis Evo 2 is a 2018 Malaysian buddy cop action film. Co-produced and distributed by Astro Shaw, the film directed by Joel Soh and Andre Chiew, starring Zizan Razak and Shaheizy Sam reprise their respective roles, with Indonesian actress Raline Shah joined them as the main cast. It revolves Malaysian and Indonesian police to crippled a group of terrorists attacking a hostile village and detaining residents as the hostages.
Hairul Azreen Idris is a former Malaysian actor and film director. He is best known for starring in the action films PASKAL, Polis Evo 2, WIRA and MALBATT: Misi Bakara.
Mechamato is a Malaysian animated series produced by Animonsta Studios, focusing on a boy named Amato and his partner robot MechaBot, who fight against bad robots. Mechamato is a part of the BoBoiBoy franchise and the series canonically takes place before BoBoiBoy and BoBoiBoy Galaxy.
Mechamato Movie is a 2022 Malaysian animated action film and a prequel to the animated series Mechamato: The Animated Series. Produced by Animonsta Studios and Astro Shaw with distributed by Astro Shaw, the film is written and directed by Nizam Razak, co-directed by Dzubir Mohamed Zakaria and stars Armand Ezra, Adzlan Nazir, Fadhli Mohd Rawi, Ielham Iskandar, Marissa Balqis, Fazreen Mohd, Hazzley Abu Bakar, and Feroz Faizal. The film follows Amato's first encounter with the MechaBot in a crashed prison spaceship where Amato eventually becomes the MechaBot's new master, leading them to be pursued by the mercenary Grakakus.
Polis Evo 3 is a 2023 Malaysian buddy cop action comedy film directed by Syafiq Yusof from the story by Joel Soh starring Zizan Razak and Shaheizy Sam who reprise their respective roles, with Sharnaaz Ahmad joining them as the main antagonist. A sequel to Polis Evo (2015) and Polis Evo 2 (2018), the film is the third and final installment in the Polis Evo film series. Originally slated for a 2021 release, the film was postponed to 2022 before officially being released on 25 May 2023.
MALBATT: Misi Bakara is a 2023 Malaysian Malay-language military war action film directed, produced and screenplay by Adrian Teh. This film stars Bront Palarae, Shaheizy Sam, Hairul Azreen, Zahiril Adzim, Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin, Adlin Aman Ramlie, Fauzi Nawawi, Tony Eusoff, Syazwan Zulkifly, Dafi Ismail Sabri, Taufiq Hanafi, Nafiez Zaidi, Dini Schatzmann, Gambit Saifullah, Theebaan G, Safwan Nazri and Ikhram Juhari. It is based on the true story of a Malaysian military operation to help rescue US Rangers trapped in a civil war in Somalia in 1993. The film was released on 24 August 2023 in Malaysia and Singapore.
Keluang Man is an upcoming 2025 Malaysian live-action superhero film based on the eponymous Malaysian animated series by UAS Animation Studio. Produced by Astro Shaw and Pasal Productions, it's a live-action film based on the animated series created by the late Kamn Ismail, and will be the first fully live-action film from a Malaysian animation series of the 1990s. The film will be directed, written and produced by Anwari Ashraf, who co-wrote it with Roshfaizal Ariffin, Luqman Sheikh Ghazali, Natasha Azlan and Zulaikha Zakaria. It stars Nas-T as Borhan, Remy Ishak as Shamsir, Rosyam Nor as Ahmad and Anwaar Beg Moghal as Inspector Sahab.

Joel Soh is a Malaysian film director, producer and writer. He is the founder and managing director of his own production company Blackflag, and most recognized for his works in the Polis Evo franchise. The Experts is a 2024 Malaysian action crime film directed by Andre Chiew and Nazim Shah with story by Joel Soh who also produced the film and Kyle Goonting, head of production and development at Astro Shaw. Co-produced and distributed by Astro Shaw and TGV Pictures, the film stars Aaron Aziz, Syafiq Kyle, Remy Ishak, Mimi Lana and Ray Dapdap as family members.
Kyle Ezra Goonting, also known by the nickname Be Wilder Beans, is a Malaysian film screenwriter, creative development, supervising and creative producer. He is currently the head of production & development in Astro Shaw, the company he worked for since Polis Evo production. He is also one of the key people for the Polis Evo franchise alongside Joel Soh and Anwari Ashraf. He was also the co-creator and a founding member of Blackflag, a Malaysian film company managed by Soh.
