Early life

Born Melanie Ann Weston, West was raised in Woodend. [1] She attended Woodend Primary School and eight high schools because her family followed her stepfather's engineering work around the country. [1] West began performing in front of family and friends at an early age. [1] [ unreliable source? ] In 1992, she entered the New South Wales Talented Child Drama Ensemble and later studied at Swinburne University of Technology, Tamworth Conservatorium of Music, and Riverina Drama Ensemble. [2]

In January 2023, West revealed she was sexually abused as a child; the abuse began when she was 5 years old and continued for five years. She said, "Part of the reason I went into acting was to wear someone else's skin, to hide what was actually happening in my life". [3]

West's abuser was a man named Peter White, who used to be her neighbour. In 2022, West decided to get justice against White, who was now a businessman, former plumber and who had a large family of his own. West met White in his home. Unbeknownst to White, she was wearing a recording wire. White did not deny the abuse, but claimed he could not remember it. He apologised to West and asked for forgiveness. However, West later said that the man was not truly remorseful. Her quest for justice revealed that White had abused other children, bringing the total of his victims to seven. All the victims joined West in exposing White's abuse and this resulted in White being charged with 33 sexual offences. White, aged 73, pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with a minimum of nine years to be served before he can be considered for parole. [4]

Career

After commencing a degree in law at Deakin University, West deferred her studies indefinitely to turn to acting. [5] In 1999, West was awarded the 'Be Your Best' Performance Scholarship from the Australian Drug Foundation. West's amateur theatre credits include Arsenic and Old Lace , Night Reflections, Theatre in the Raw, Bye Bye Birdie , and Snow Queen.

West joined the cast of Neighbours as Dee Bliss in 1999. Two years later, she was nominated for the "Most Popular New Female Talent" Logie Award. [6] In March 2003, it was announced West was to leave Neighbours after her contract expired. [7] She filmed her final scenes in early April. [8]

West appeared in crime drama Underbelly as Danielle McGuire in 2008. [9] In 2011, she joined the cast of Winners & Losers in the recurring role of Deidre Gross. [10] West previously turned down a role with the show due to being heavily pregnant with her third child. [10]

In 2013, West appeared in series two of House Husbands as Dimity. [1] She reprised her role of Danielle McGuire in the Underbelly spin-off series Fat Tony & Co. . [9] The series focuses on the rise and fall of Tony Mokbel, who also featured in the original series, played by Robert Mammone. [9] She also made a guest appearance in an episode of Mr & Mrs Murder as a receptionist. [11]

In 2017, West returned to Neighbours to play Andrea Somers, a lookalike who posed as Dee Bliss. West also joined the cast of The Wrong Girl as TV host Erica Jones. [12] Her first book titled Six Under Eight was published in March of that year. [12] West has since launched a series of children's books called Lily D, V.A.P. (Very Amazing Performer). [13] The books focus on topics such as bullying, illness and body image, and are told through schoolgirl Lily as she takes on different characters for a play. [13]

West worked with former detective Gary Jubelin on the 2023 eight-part podcast series Predatory, which brings attention to child sexual abuse. The podcast called for Australia's sex offender registry to be made public and for victims to be fairly compensated. [3] [14]

In 2024, West joined Broad Radio in a guest host capacity. [15]

Personal life

In July 2002, West was hit by a bus in Sydney. The actress was also robbed while she was unconscious. [16] She needed reconstructive plastic surgery and had to be written out of Neighbours but returned to the show a month later. [16]

West was engaged to Shopping for Love co-host Pete Lazer, [17] before entering into a relationship with Shannon Bennett, a restaurateur, in 2005. [1] [10] The couple have six children together. [1] [18] [12] [19] In September 2018, West confirmed that she and Bennett had separated, but were "striving to reconnect as friends and parents". [20]

West has been in a relationship with environmentalist Maximo Bottaro since 2020, after meeting him while volunteering at his organisation ReForest Now. [21]

On 13 January 2025, West announced that she was expecting her seventh child. [22]

The Rochdale child sex abuse ring involved underage teenage girls in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. Nine men were convicted of sex trafficking and other offences including rape, trafficking girls for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child in May 2012. This resulted in Greater Manchester Police launching Operation Doublet and other operations to investigate further claims of abuse. As of January 2024 a total of 42 men had been convicted resulting in jail sentences totalling 432 years. Forty-seven girls were identified as victims of child sexual exploitation during the initial police investigation. The men were British Pakistanis, which led to discussion on whether the failure to investigate them was linked to the authorities' fear of being accused of racial prejudice. The girls were mainly White British.

Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal Sexual abuse scandal in England

The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal refers to the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England, from the late 1980s until 2013. An estimated 1,400 girls, commonly from care home backgrounds, were abused by "grooming gangs" of predominantly British-Pakistani men between 1997 and 2013. Researcher Angie Heal, who was hired by local officials and warned them about child exploitation occurring between 2002 and 2007, has since described it as the "biggest child protection scandal in UK history".

The Telford child sexual exploitation scandal is an ongoing scandal spanning over several decades in the United Kingdom involving a group of men who were convicted of engaging in sexual contact with local female minors between 2007 and 2009 in Telford in the English county of Shropshire. While media reports had suggested there were 100 or more victims and around 200 suspects, the Sunday Mirror reported in March 2018 that up to 1,000 may have been affected, with some even murdered, in incidents dating back to the 1970s. Social workers and police cast doubt on this report, denying that Telford had a "discernible problem compared to other towns".

Child sexual abuse in the United Kingdom includes the proliferation of indecent images, online exploitation, transnational abuse, and contact abuse. Efforts to prevent child sexual abuse include providing information to children and parents, and disrupting abusive situations. Perpetrators may act alone or as part of a group or street gang, and may either exploit vulnerabilities in children and young people or have long-standing sexual attraction to children. Underreporting of child sexual abuse and low conviction rates remain barriers to justice, among other factors. In the UK, high profile media coverage of child sexual abuse has often focused on cases of institutional and celebrity abuse, as well as offences committed by groups, also known informally as grooming gangs.

The Keighley child sex abuse ring was a group of twelve men who committed serious sexual offences against two under-aged girls in the English town of Keighley and city of Bradford, West Yorkshire. In December 2015, they were found guilty of rape and other forms of sexual abuse by a unanimous jury verdict at Bradford Crown Court. They were sentenced in February 2016 to a total of 130 years in jail. The main victim, who had been targeted by ten of the men, was aged between 13 and 14 at the time of the attacks between 2011 and 2012.

Andrea made her first appearance on 20 January 2017 and her first stint ended on 23 March. Andrea is initially credited as Dee Bliss and is depicted as calm, polite and charismatic. As her identity of Andrea Somers is revealed, her character increasingly becomes impatient, insecure, restless and easily agitated.

The Adass Israel School sex abuse scandal is a criminal case and extradition dispute regarding incidents of child sex abuse at a Jewish religious school in Melbourne, Australia. A former principal, Malka Leifer, faced trial on 70 sex offence charges laid by Victoria Police, with accusations from at least eight alleged victims. Leifer, a dual Israeli-Australian citizen, fled under suspicious circumstances shortly before a warrant could be issued, and remained in Israeli-controlled territory from 2008 until January 2021, under varying levels of police and court supervision, pending the resolution of her extradition case. Leifer's trial did not address other alleged sex crimes in Israel and the West Bank because they did not occur in Australia.
