Madhesh Province Cricket Association [1] also known as Madhesh Pradesh Cricket (formerly Province No. 2) is the governing body for cricket in Madhesh Province, a domestic cricket team representing the state of Madhesh, Nepal.

Contents

It governs cricket teams (Men, Women [2] ) and organises, and sanctions, cricket tournaments in Madhesh Province. Its Madhesh Pradesh cricket team is the one of the most dominant teams in Nepal's PM Cup. [3] In 2023, Madhesh Province Cricket Association organized the Mahendra Narayan Nidhi National T20 Cricket Tournament. [4]

History

Madhesh Province Cricket Team was named after Madhesh Province. Earlier, the team was known by Cricket Province 2. [5] Mehboob Alam, Bibek Yadav, Anil Sah, Mohammad Aadil Alam and many others have played for the national team. In June 2022, U-15 Players and team won the Strong Nepal Cup U-15 Cricket Tournament. [6]

Cricket in Nepal has gained popularity over the years and has become the country's one of the most popular and widely followed sport. It rapidly grew popularity in the mid 2010s, following the slight successes of the Nepalese cricket team as well as the country's explosive rise in social media and television viewing influence from neighboring country India. It is played by many people throughout the country, especially in the Terai region. The biggest cricketing achievement of the national cricket team was when the team reached the qualification tournament of 2014 ICC World T20 held in Bangladesh. Nepal's playing season runs from September to November and starts again in March before finishing in May. As of October 2023, there were 3400 senior cricket clubs and over 35000 registered players in Nepal.

Madhesh Province is a province of Nepal in the Terai region with an area of 9,661 km2 (3,730 sq mi) covering about 6.5% of the country's total area. It has a population of 6,126,288 as per the 2021 Nepal census, making it Nepal's most densely populated province and the smallest province by area. It borders Koshi Pradesh to the east and the north, Bagmati Province to the north, and India’s Bihar state to the south and the west. The border between Chitwan National Park and Parsa National Park acts as the provincial boundary in the west, and the Kosi River forms the provincial border in the east. The province includes eight districts, from Parsa in the west to Saptari in the east.

Anil Kumar Sah is a Nepalese cricketer. He made his List A debut for Nepal in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament on 12 February 2018. He was one of the eleven cricketers to play in Nepal's first ever One Day International (ODI) match, against the Netherlands, in August 2018.

Mohammad Lalbabu Raut from Federal Socialist Forum, Nepal was sworn in the Chief Ministers of Madhesh Province in February 2018. Present arrangement of cabinet is the result of talk between two Former Deputy Prime Ministers, PSP-N President Upendra Yadav and Nepali Congress Vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi who have strong hold in this region from their respective parties.

Aasif Sheikh is a Nepalese cricketer, who plays as right-handed wicket-keeper-batsman. He made his debut for Nepal against the Netherlands in a Twenty20 International in April 2021. He is renowned for his classical batting style. He is the only Nepalese player with over 10 ODI cricket half-centuries, with 12 to be precise.

Mahendra Narayan Nidhi Awas Yojana is an initiative by the Nepali Government of Madhesh Province in which affordable housing will be provided to the urban poor with a target of building 610 affordable houses by 31 March 2022.

The 2023 KP Oli Cup was the inaugural edition of the KP Oli Cup, the domestic T20 tournament in Nepal. The tournament was contested by teams representing the seven Provinces of Nepal, three departmental teams as well as two organizer teams. It began on 23 November 2023 and ended on 1 December 2023.

The 2023–24 Prime Minister Cup (Women) was the ninth edition of the Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament, the premier Twenty20 cricket tournament in Nepal. The tournament was contested by teams representing the seven Provinces of Nepal as well as one departmental teams. It began on 21 December 2023 and end on 3 January 2024. The format was changed for the 2023–24 season, with the eight teams competing in a round-robin format with the top four advancing to the play-offs.
