Madrasa is the Arabic word for any type of educational institution, secular or religious, whether for elementary instruction or higher learning. The word is variously transliterated madrasah, medresa, madrassa, madraza, medrese, etc. In the West, the word usually refers to a specific type of religious school or college for the study of the Islamic religion, though this may not be the only subject studied.

The Islamic University of Madinah was founded by the government of Saudi Arabia by a royal decree in 1961 in the Islamic holy city of Medina. Although some have associated the Salafi ideology to the university, it has been seen as a misunderstanding due to the institution's objectivity and detachment to any singular ideology. The university received institutional academic accreditation without exceptions from the National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment in April 2017.
