Magda Gad (Swedish pronunciation: [magdagad] [1] ) (born 17 October 1975) is a Swedish war correspondent and Middle Eastern analyst who writes, photographs and films her stories.

She has been a correspondent for the Swedish media outlet Expressen since 2015. Gad got international recognition in June 2016 when she covered the assault on Mosul in Iraq. She reported on the war against ISIS.

She has been reporting from Afghanistan since September 2018, and is one of the few western journalists who gained access to the Taliban before the Taliban's take over in 2021. She stayed in Afghanistan during the take over and was never evacuated. She continues to report from Afghanistan.

Personal life

Gad was raised in Falun in Dalarna County, Sweden. Her father worked as a physician and researcher while her mother worked as a dental nurse for an oral surgeon. [2] She studied political science and journalism in Stockholm.[ citation needed ]

Career

Between 2004 and 2014, Gad worked as a journalist and editor for newspapers such as Tidningen Vi, Läkartidningen , [3] Modern Psykologi, [4] Café, [5] Svenska Dagbladet , QX, and as a feature and news journalist for the newspaper Aftonbladet . She has also written for the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières. [6]

In 2015, she moved to Expressen where she has been working as a war correspondent. She also co-founded the investigative journalism platform Blankspot.

Magda Gad hosted the Swedish radio show Sommar I P1 in 2017. [7]

The Nordic Prize is a literary award presented annually by the Swedish Academy. The recipient is someone from the Nordic countries who has done significant work in any of the Academy's areas of operations or interests. The inaugural award was in 1986 and was founded with a donation from Karen and Karl Ragnar Gierows. The prize amount consists of kr 400,000. The prize has been referred to as the "little Nobel" because it is awarded by the same Academy that gives the Nobel Prize.

The Stig Dagerman Prize is a Swedish award given since 1996 by the Stig Dagerman Society and Älvkarleby municipality. It is named in honor of Swedish author Stig Dagerman. The award is given to a person who, or an organization that, in the spirit of Stig Dagerman, supports the significance and availability of the "free word", promoting inter-cultural understanding and empathy. It was inspired by Dagerman's poem En dag om året that sets forth a vision of peace for humanity by imagining one day each year when the world is free from violence.

The Astrid Lindgren Prize is a Swedish literary award for children's literature named after the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. The prize was instituted by the publishing house Rabén & Sjögren in 1967 to honour Lindgren on her 60th birthday.
