Mahbubul Alam Hanif is a Bangladeshi politician and businessman. He is the incumbent member of parliament for Kushtia-3 since 2014. Currently he is a joint general secretary of the Awami League. [1] [2] He worked at the Prime Minister's Office as special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from 2009 to 2013.
Hanif was born on 1 January 1959 at his ancestral home in Courtpara, Kushtia Sadar Upazila of Kushtia District. [3]
After passing HSC examination with good grade from Dhaka College, he became a student of the University of Dhaka in the Department of Management. [4]
Hanif was elected joint general secretary of the Awami League in 2009. [5] He worked at the Prime Minister's Office as special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from 2009 to 2013. During his service in PMO, he demanded the nomination for Kushtia-2, whose incumbent was Hasanul Haq Inu, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. [6] He was fired from his job by the Ministry of Public Administration. [6] He was given the nomination for Kushtia-3 and was elected as an Awami League candidate. [7] [8]
Hanif supported the construction of Medical College and Haripur Bridge, construction of Kushtia Bypass Road, and Kushtia District stadium. [9] [10] In addition, a swimming pool has been constructed in Kushtia city and many roads have been constructed in the vicinity. [11]
Construction of 1000 MW power landing station has been completed in Kushtia. And 350 MW power has been connected to Bheramara Combined Cycle Power Plant. The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Shishu Park is being constructed on about 35 acres of land on the banks of Gorai river. [11]
The Bangladesh Awami League, often simply called the Awami League or AL, is one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. The oldest existing political party in the country, the party played a large role in achieving Bangladeshi independence both before and after the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time.
The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was another landslide victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence, and were widely considered by opposition politicians and the international community to be rigged.
