Mahesh Desai is an Indian urologist who treats various kidney and urological diseases in India. He performs renal transplants in Gujarat, India. [1]
Desai acquired his M.B.B.S. degree in 1966 from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad and his M.S. in General Surgery from Pune University. [2] In 1973, he received a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh, where he obtained specialized training in urology. He returned to India to start his practice and establish the importance of modern treatment for various kidney diseases in Ahmedabad. [2] In collaboration with Dr V. V. Desai, he established Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) at Nadiad, a rural area in the state of Gujarat in India. Desai aimed to help men with adequate medical facilities concerning their urological diseases. [2]
He treats patients with techniques such as percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL), ureteroscopy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Desai performed over 14,000 PCNL procedures in his lifetime. Additionally, he expanded the use of ultrasound technology in urology and also established live kidney transplantation services for the first time in Gujarat. He performed the first renal transplant in Gujarat in 1980. More than 2,100 renal transplants have been carried out at MPUH under his supervision. He also organized the epidemiological survey of prostatic diseases for aging male population in Gujarat. [2]
He is the managing trustee of MPUH and honorary managing director of Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephrology-Urology and the medical director at MPUH and a director at Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre, which is associated with the MPUH>
He has held urology and endourology positions both at the national and international levels. He was declared the president of the Society International d'Urologie (SIU) at the 31st World Congress held in Berlin, Germany. [3] He is also the president-elect of The Endourological Society. [4] [5] He is the elected president of the Asian Society of Endourology. [6] He was the president of the Urological Society of India, chairman of the Endourology Education Training Site Committee of Endourology Society Inc, [6] and a member of the International Committee of American Urological Association. [6] Desai is also the first Indian to become a member of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. [6]
Desai created the Centre for Robotic Surgery in cooperation with his colleague Aryan Cobson, a specialty technological initiative where a robot is used to perform nephro-urological (kidney & bladder) surgeries. Desai's research interests are endourology with special interest in urolithiasis, ultrasonography in urology, kidney transplantation, pediatric urology, urologic oncology and prostate cancer. [2]
Desai has conducted over 160 workshops and conferences in India. [6] He has produced over 750 scientific papers, more than 120 of them in national and international journals. He is a frequent contributor to the Journal of Endourology. [2]
He has presented over 250 lectures and has given talks at national and international seminars and conferences. Under his leadership, the World Congress on Endourology was held in Mumbai in November 2004, the first time that the congress had been held in India. In 2003, he was the first Indian guest lecturer to present a plenary session of American Urological Association's Annual Conference in Chicago.

Dr. Mahendra Bhandari is an Indian surgeon who has made substantial contributions to the specialty of urology, medical training, hospital administration, robotic surgery and medical ethics. For his efforts, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India in 2000. Bhandari is currently Senior Bio-scientist and Director of Robotic Surgery Research & Education at the Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI) in Detroit, MI. He was the Symposium coordinator of the International Robotic Urology Symposium. He also has been the CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation since 2010.
Mani Menon, born 9 July 1948 in Trichur, India, is an American surgeon whose work has helped to lay the foundation for modern Robotic Cancer Surgery. He is the founding director and the Raj and Padma Vattikuti Distinguished Chair of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, where he established the first cancer-oriented robotics program in the world. Menon is widely regarded for his role in the development of robotic surgery techniques for the treatment of patients with prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, as well as for the development of robotic kidney transplantation.

John P. Donohue was an American physician. He was the Chairman of the Urology Department and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University School of Medicine. He pioneered treatments for testicular cancer, including the nerve-sparing technique. His work with Dr. Lawrence Einhorn led to an increase in cure rate of testicular cancer from 5% to 90%. Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Dr. Janak D. Desai is an Indian urologist best known for developing the technique of Ultra-Mini PCNL which involves kidney stone removal by a minimally invasive key-hole technique which reduces the blood loss, pain and hospitalization for a patient suffering from kidney stone. He is the recipient of the B. C. Roy Award given by the President of India and an honorary FRCS by the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow. He is also a recipient of the John Wickham Medal & lecture by the Royal Society of Medicine-Urology Section.
