Maine Open

The Maine Open is the Maine state open golf tournament, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is organized by the Maine State Golf Association. It has been played annually since 1918 at a variety of courses around the state.

Contents

The first tournament, in 1918, was won by Arthur H. Fenn, who is stated by some sources to be the first American-born golf professional. [1] The tournament is currently called The Maine Event [2]

The Michelob Championship at Kingsmill was a golf tournament on the PGA Tour from 1968 to 2002. It was played in Virginia at the River Course of Kingsmill Golf Club outside of Williamsburg, from 1981 to 2002. From 1977 through 1995, it was known as the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic.

Norman Vico Drew was a Northern Irish professional golfer. He had a successful amateur career, winning a number of Irish championships and playing in the 1953 Walker Cup. In the 1959 season, he won the Yorkshire Evening News Tournament and played in the Ryder Cup. Drew later represented Ireland in the Canada Cup, becoming the first golfer to play in the Walker Cup, Ryder Cup and Canada Cup. He was renowned for his short game.

Michael Thomas "Fluff" Cowan is a professional golf caddie on the PGA Tour. He is a 40-year tour veteran and one of its best-known caddies. Cowan has caddied for Ed Sabo (1976–1978), Peter Jacobsen (1978–1996), Tiger Woods (1996–1999), and Jim Furyk (1999–present). In 2003, he caddied for then-13-year-old amateur ladies' golfing sensation Michelle Wie for one tournament while Furyk was off due to injury. The Ryder Cup in 2012 was Cowan's eleventh, carrying for four different players: Jacobsen, Fred Couples, Woods, and Furyk. Cowan earned his nickname "Fluff" from his resemblance to professional golfer and broadcaster Steve Melnyk, also nicknamed "Fluff."

The Connecticut Open is the Connecticut state open golf tournament, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is organized by the Connecticut State Golf Association. It has been played annually since 1931 at a variety of courses around the state. It was considered a PGA Tour event in the 1930s.

The Metropolitan Open is a golf tournament organized by the Metropolitan Golf Association. In the early 20th century it was one of the top events in the country and was retroactively given PGA Tour-level status.

Edward Wallace Neal Loos was an American professional golfer who played in the early-to-mid 20th century. His best performance in a major golf championship was a T10 finish in the 1924 U.S. Open. He won the 1917 Shawnee Open, the 1921 California State Open, and the Illinois PGA Championship in 1922 and 1924. Loos was a frequent competitor in the PGA Championship, last playing in 1935. He had 13 second-place finishes on the PGA Tour after 1915.

The 1974 Maine Black Bears football team represented the University of Maine in the 1974 NCAA Division II football season. They were led by eighth-year head coach Walter Abbott and finished the season with an overall record of 4–6 and a 4–2 mark in the Yankee Conference. Maine shared the conference title with UMass.

The 1973 Maine Black Bears football team was an American football team that represented the University of Maine as a member of the Yankee Conference during the 1973 NCAA Division II football season. In its seventh season under head coach Walter Abbott, the team compiled a 3–7 record and finished sixth out of seven teams in the Yankee Conference. Andrew Mellow, John O'Rourke Jr., and Jack Lamborghini were the team captains.

Michael Violette Colandro was an American professional golfer. Colandro played briefly on the PGA Tour in 1979 and 1980 but did not have much success. In 1981, he started to play on the PGA Tour of Australia. Despite multiple personal tragedies, a rancorous relationship with rules officials, and a precarious exemption status he was able to play 16 consecutive seasons on the Australian tour, culminating with his only official tour victory, the 1987 Air New Zealand Shell Open. In 1995, he largely retired as a touring professional. He still worked in the golf industry, however, as a swing instructor, creator of golf-related DVDs-CDs, and charity fundraiser, while also working on a self-published autobiography, Almost an Aussie.

The Greater Bangor Open was an American golf tournament. It was played annually from 1967 to 2016 at Bangor Municipal Golf Course in Bangor, Maine.
