Olympia Jean Snowe is an American businesswoman and politician who was a United States Senator from Maine from 1995 to 2013. Snowe, a member of the Republican Party, became widely known for her ability to influence the outcome of close votes, including whether to end filibusters. In 2006, she was named one of America's Best Senators by Time Magazine. Snowe was famously known for her ability to compromise and her strong sense of bipartisanship. Throughout her senate career, she was considered one of the most moderate members of the senate.
John F. Tierney is an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1997 to 2015. He is a Democrat who represented the state's 6th district, which includes the state's North Shore and Cape Ann. Born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, Tierney graduated from Salem State College and Suffolk University Law School. He worked in private law and served on the Salem Chamber of Commerce from 1976 to 1997. Tierney first ran for the House of Representatives in 1994 against Republican incumbent Peter G. Torkildsen, losing by a small margin. He defeated Torkildsen in a rematch in 1996.

The President's Republican Party lost seats in the House, which could be viewed as a response to the President's approval at the time. Unlike most midterm election cycles, the number of seats lost—26 seats to the Democratic Party—was a comparatively large swap. It included most of the seats that had been gained the previous election, cementing the Democratic majority. Coincidentally, the number of seats the Democratic picked up (26), was the exact amount the Republicans needed to win the House majority.

Considered a moderate, Huber focused much of her time in the legislature on energy issues. In 1982, Huber ran for Governor of Maine, finishing second in the Republican primary behind Charles Cragin. She became the first woman ever to run in the Republican Party for Governor of Maine while, in the same election, Rep. Georgette Berube challenged incumbent Democrat Joseph Brennan. Huber ran unenrolled in 1986, finishing third with 15.7%. During the 1986 election, Huber was unanimously endorsed by the Maine Lesbian-Gay Political Alliance. In 2008, Huber was named as a notable Republican supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. She has been the long-time Executive Director of the Maine Timber Research and Environmental Education Foundation.
