Makenke is a neighborhood within Mbarara City, in the Western Region of Uganda. [1]
Makenke is located in Kakiika Parish, in Kakiika sub-county, approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi), by road, north-east of Mbarara city's central business district, along the Mbarara–Masaka Highway. [2]
It borders with Kakyenkye to the north, Koranorya to the east, Kakoba to the south west and Nyamityobora to the west. The geographical coordinates of Makenke are 0°34'42.0"S, 30°41'08.0"E (Latitude:-0.578333; Longitude:30.685556). [1]
Makenke is a low income settlement in the city of Mbarara. The settlement is found in the Kakiika Division of Mbarara City Council. Prior to that, Makenke was part of Kashari County until July 2014 when it was incorporated into Mbarara Municipality. [3]
The 2nd Division of the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) maintains its headquarters at Makenke. [4] In the Makenke barracks, Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society maintains a branch. [5] It is also the location of Mbarara Army boarding secondary School and Mbarara Army primary school, that cater to the children of the soldiers and other neighbouring civilian settlers.
Makenke is the location of Mbarara Industrial Park, administered by the Uganda Investment Authority. [6] Mbarara Coca Cola Bottling Plant, owned by Century Bottling Company Limited, a subsidiary of Coca Cola International, is located in Makenke. [7]
The Mbarara Northern Bypass Road, starts at Makenke, then progresses northwestwards through Rwebishuri, Nkokonjeru, Ruharo, across the River Rwizi, before it ends at Nyakayojo, along the Mbarara–Ntungamo–Kabale–Katuna Road, a total distance of about 14.5 kilometres (9 mi). [8]
Mbarara City is a city in the Western Region of Uganda and the second largest city in Uganda after Kampala. The city is divided into 6 boroughs/divisions of Kakoba Division, Kamukuzi Division, Nyamitanga Division, Biharwe Division, Kakiika Division, Nyakayojo Division. It is the main commercial centre of most of south western districts of Uganda and the site of the district headquarters. In May 2019, the Uganda's cabinet granted Mbarara a city status, which started on 1 July 2020.
Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a private university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. The University is owned by the Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Uganda. It is licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. UMU consists of seven faculties, one institute, four centers, five departments, and two schools. As of January 2015, total student enrollment exceeded 5,000. Of these, about 1,500 students were residential, while nearly 3,000 students were enrolled in UMU's distance learning programs. The number of staff members was over 400.

Major General Sam Kavuma, whose full name is Samuel Kavuma, is a Ugandan senior military officer. He currently serves as the deputy coordinator of the Operation Wealth Creation effective 24 June 2021, he was appointed by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Immediately prior to his current position, he served as the deputy commander of the UPDF Air Force. Before that, Kavuma served as the Commander of the UPDF Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). He was appointed to that position in October 2014.
