A law society is an association of lawyers with a regulatory role that includes the right to supervise the training, qualifications, and conduct of lawyers. Where there is a distinction between barristers and solicitors, solicitors are regulated by the law societies and barristers by a separate bar council.
The call to the bar is a legal term of art in most common law jurisdictions where persons must be qualified to be allowed to argue in court on behalf of another party and are then said to have been "called to the bar" or to have received "call to the bar". "The bar" is now used as a collective noun for barristers, but literally referred to the wooden barrier in old courtrooms, which separated the often crowded public area at the rear from the space near the judges reserved for those having business with the court. Barristers would sit or stand immediately behind it, facing the judge, and could use it as a table for their briefs.
Norbert Mao is a Ugandan political activist and lawyer. He has been president of the Democratic Party since 2010, three time presidential candidate and served as the Local Council 5 chairman for Gulu District. He is the current minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Ugandan government, an office he assumed on 21 July 2022. He was appointed to this position by Yoweri Museveni, the president of the Republic of Uganda. The appointment drew immense criticism from the Democratic Party, an opposition party he is currently serving as president. It was seen as a move by President Museveni to tame the Party and clip its wings to criticize his government.
Hilary Obaloker Onek is a Ugandan engineer and politician. He is the current Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2013. He replaced Tarsis Kabwegyere. Prior to that, Hilary Onek served as the Minister for Energy & Minerals, from 16 February 2009 until 27 May 2011. Before that, he served as Uganda's Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry & Fisheries from 2006 to 2009. He is also the elected Member of Parliament (MP) representing Lamwo County, Lamwo District. He was first elected to Parliament in 2001.
Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi is a Ugandan politician and lawyer who served as the eighth vice president of Uganda from 24 May 2011 to 21 June 2021. Prior to that, he served as the Speaker of Parliament from 2001 to 2011. He served as Member of Parliament for Bukoto County Central constituency from 1996 to 2021.
Beatrice Atim Anywar, also Betty Anywar,, is a Ugandan politician who serves as the Member of Parliament representing the Kitgum Municipality Constituency in the 10th Ugandan Parliament. Effective 14 December 2019, she concurrently serves as the State Minister for the Environment, in the Ugandan Cabinet. She replaced Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu, who was appointed Minister of Energy and Minerals, in the same cabinet.
Arif Virani is a Canadian lawyer and politician who has served as the minister of justice and attorney general of Canada since July 2023. A member of the Liberal Party, Virani represents Parkdale—High Park in the House of Commons. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, he held a number of parliamentary secretary portfolios, including to the minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship from 2015 to 2017, and to the minister of Canadian heritage (multiculturalism) from 2017 to 2018, to the minister of justice and attorney general from 2018 to 2021, and to the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development from 2021 to 2023.
Samuel Kwizera Bitangaro is a Ugandan lawyer and politician. He is the elected Member of Parliament for Bufumbira County South, in Kisoro District, in the Western Region of Uganda, to the 10th Parliament (2016–2021).
Richard Muhumuza Gafabusa is a Ugandan environmentalist, administrative lawyer and politician. He is the elected Member of Parliament for Bwamba County and a representative for NRM, the ruling political party in Uganda. He is a member of the Committee on Science and Technology, the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and the NRM Parliamentary Caucus in the 10th Parliament of Uganda. In 2021 he was re elected into parliament. In the eleventh parliament, Gafabusa serves on the Committee on Trade, Tourism and Industry.
Jack Crissy Sabiiti is a Ugandan lecturer, public administrator and politician. He is the former Member of Parliament for Rukiga County, Kigezi sub-region and a founding member of FDC, the main opposition party in Uganda. He was the first treasurer general of FDC and now serves as the party's treasurer for Kabale District.
Rosemary Bikaako Tumusiime is a Ugandan marketing professional, public administrator, feminist and politician. She is the elected Member of Parliament for Entebbe Municipality and is a representative for NRM, the ruling political party in Uganda. She is the first female representative for the constituency in over three decades and succeeded Muhammad Kawuma who served for two consecutive terms from 2006 to 2016. In the 10th Parliament, she serves as a member of the Committee on Equal Opportunities and the Committee on Presidential Affairs. She is also a member of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, the Buganda Parliamentary Caucusand the treasurer of the Network for African Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (NAWMP).
Philip Polly Okin Ojara is a Ugandan social worker and politician. He is the elected member of parliament for Chua West County, Kitgum District, and is an Independent politician who closely associates with FDC, the main opposition party in Uganda. He is a member the Caucus of Independent MPs and the Opposition Caucus and also serves as the vice chairperson of the Committee on Local Government Accounts and as a member of the Appointments Committee and the Committee on Agriculture in the 10th Parliament of Uganda.
Lawrence Cherop Mangusho is a Ugandan public administrator, farmer and politician. He is the elected member of parliament for Kween County, Kween District, and a representative for National Resistance Movement (NRM), the ruling political party in Uganda. He is a member the NRM Parliamentary Caucus and serves on the Committee on Physical Infrastructure and the Committee on Government Assurances in the 10th Parliament of Uganda.
Anna Ebaju Adeke is a Ugandan lawyer and politician. Currently she serves as the Member of Parliament representing Women in Soroti District in the 11th Parliament (2021–2026). She previously served as the parliamentary representative of the National Female Youth Constituency in the 10th parliament (2016–2021). She serves as the Deputy President for Forum for Democratic Change in Eastern Region.
Molly Lanyero is a Ugandan politician who was elected to the 10th Parliament (2016-2021), as a District Woman Representative representing Lamwo District.
Samuel Odonga Otto,, is a lawyer in Uganda, who serves as the Uganda Law Review for Aruu County Constituency in Pader District, in the Northern Region of that county. He has continuously represented that constituency since 2001.
Jackson Karugaba Kafuuzi,, is a Ugandan politician who serves as the incumbent Member of Parliament representing the Kyaka South County Constituency, Kyegegwa District, in the 10th Ugandan Parliament.
Beatrice Akello Akori is a Ugandan politician. She is a woman member of parliament in the eleventh Parliament of Uganda (2021–26), serving as a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement party.
Akello Judith Franca is a Ugandan politician and economist. She is the district woman representative of Agago in the eighth, ninth and tenth Parliament of Uganda. In the eleventh Parliament, she stood for Woman MP for Agago but lost with 26,840 votes. She was affiliated to the Forum for Democratic Change political party in the 10th Parliament. She was also the National Resistance Movement member.
Lagen David Atuka is a politician from Uganda who is the member of 11th Parliament of Uganda from Agago Constituency. In the current election he got 9,300 votes and succeeded Makmot Otto who got 8,700 votes.
