History

Malawi and Tanzania established diplomatic relations in 1985. [1]

Lake Malawi dispute

The two countries share a border at Lake Malawi; the border demarcation has been a dispute between the two countries since the independence of both nations. Several diplomatic exchanges have eurpted over time, however, both countries have not come to an agreement. The lake is referred to as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania. [2]

Trade and economy

Malawi gets a significant amount its imports/exports through the port of Port of Dar es Salaam. Malawi and Tanzania have one major land crossing in Songwe-Kasumulu; both countries are working to develop a one-stop border post at the crossing. [4] Alternatively, various ferries operate between the two countries on Lake Malawi with the two major ports being Mbamba Bay (Tanzania) and Nkhata Bay (Malawi). [5] [6]

Malawi Airlines operates regular scheduled flights between Malawi and Julius Nyerere International Airport. [7]

Transportation in Malawi is poorly developed. The country of almost 14 million has 39 airports, 6 with paved runways and 33 with unpaved runways. It has 797 kilometres of railways, all narrow-gauge and about 45 percent of its roads are paved. Ngonga is an administrative ward in the Kyela district of the Mbeya Region of Tanzania. The village is on Lake Nyasa by the Songwe River that forms the Tanzania and Malawi border, and thirty minute drive from the border crossing in Kasumulu. The ward covers an area of 339.4 square kilometres (131.0 sq mi) with an average elevation of 482 metres (1,581 ft).

Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) is a parastatal public corporation acting under the aegis of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, that has the responsibility "to manage and operate" the ocean ports and lake ports of the country of Tanzania. The Tanzania Ports Authrorty headquarters are located in Mchafukoge ward of Ilala District in Dar es Salaam Region. It is a member of the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa.

The Mtwara–Mbamba Bay Road, also called the A19 Road, connects the city of Mtwara on the Indian Ocean coast, to the town of Mbamba Bay on the eastern coast of Lake Malawi. It is a busy and important transport corridor in the southern regions of Tanzania. It is also an integral part of the Mtwara Development Corridor that spans four Southern African countries; Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia.

The Port of Dar es Salaam is the principal port serving Tanzania located in Kurasini ward of Temeke District of Dar es Salaam Region. The port is one of three ocean ports in the country and handles over 90% of the country's cargo traffic. According to the International Association of Ports and Harbors, it is the fourth largest port on the African continent's Indian Ocean coastline after Durban, Mombasa and Maputo. The port acts as a gateway for commerce and trade for Tanzania and numerous bordering landlocked states.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mtwara Development Corridor</span>

The Mtwara Development Project is a major infrastructure development project involving southern Tanzania, northern Mozambique, eastern Malawi and Eastern Zambia. The goal of this project is to provide road, rail and waterway access from the surrounding region to the Port of Mtwara. The region and the corridor has been neglected by the respective governments for over 40 years and the recent discovery of oil, gas and various minerals has kick started the development of the project. A road and rail link is to be built from the port of Mtwara to Mbamba Bay on Lake Nyasa to link Malawi to the corridor and further road links into Mozambique will facilitate access to northern Mozambique.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">T10 road (Tanzania)</span> Road in Tanzania

The T10 is a Trunk road in Tanzania. The road runs from Uyole in Mbeya in the southern highlands and heds south to connect to the Malawin border. THis is the only trunk road that connects to Malawi from Tanzania. The roads as it is approximately 104 km (65 mi). The road is entirely paved. The road connects to a One Stop Border post in Malawi with the Songwe M1 Bridge that crosses the river between Malawi and Tanzania.
