Malia Paseka (born 30 August 2000) is a Tongan Taekwondo athlete who made her Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. [1] She was an opening ceremony flag bearer alongside Pita Taufatofua. [2] [3]
Paseka started fighting taekwondo at the age of 11, after being invited by her brother. In 2019, Paseka won bronze in the women’s -62 kg and gold in the team event at the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, the first step in her path towards Olympic qualification. [4] [5]
In February 2020, Paseka secured her spot in the Olympics after winning gold in the women’s 67 kg division at the Olympic Qualifier tournament on Australia’s Gold Coast. Her appearance at the 2020 Summer Olympics marked the first time a female Taekwondo athlete represented Tonga at the Olympic Games. She also became the ninth female athlete to represent Tonga in any sport at the Olympic Games. [4] [6] Paseka lost in her debut by a technical knockout, after Lauren Williams kicked her in the head and the referees stopped the contest. [7] Williams going to the final sent Paseka to the repechage, lost to Hedaya Wahba.
Rugby union is the national sport in Tonga. Sumo has a following, while football, judo, surfing, volleyball, and cricket have gained popularity in recent years. Rugby league and Australian football are also played.

Tonga competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9 to 25 February 2018. It was represented by a single athlete, cross-country skier Pita Taufatofua. Pita Taufatofua, once again, marched into the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium shirtless, smothered in coconut oil, and dressed in a traditional ta'ovala, after previously doing so in Rio.
Lauren Williams is a British taekwondo athlete who represents Great Britain. Williams won her third consecutive European championship Gold medal in 2019 in Bari, Italy. She holds these titles in the -67 kg weight category. 2014/2016 Williams won the Junior World championships consecutively. In December 2018, Williams won the Grand Slam Series held in Wuxi China. Williams has 2 Gold medals from the Grand Prix Series with multiple podium finishes.

Each country may enter a maximum of 2 male and 2 female divisions with only one athlete in each division. The winners per division qualify for the Olympic Games under their NOC.
