Mamta Kharab (born 26 January 1982, Sonipat, Haryana) is an Indian former field hockey player, who represented the India women's national field hockey team. She has also captained the national team. [1] During the 2002 Commonwealth Games, she scored the winning goal which gave India the gold. She also served as the model for the character of Komal Chautala in the 2007 Bollywood hit, Chak De India . Now she is working with Haryana police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. [2] [3] She is a recipient of the Arjuna Award. [4]
Known as 'golden girl' of Indian women hockey team, Mamta Kharb was born on 26 January 1982. She was declared the best player and the best scorer in the Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament held in Malayasia, where India won the bronze medal. She has also played a leading role in India's victory in the Common Wealth Games held in Manchester in 2002.
She scored the Golden Goal in the final against England in which India won the gold medal after 32 years.
Mamta's native village is Giwana in Sonipat district of Haryana. She did her schooling from Senior Secondary School Rohtak, Haryana. Her parents Kamla and Haripal reside in Model Town area, Rohtak.
Mamta's two sisters Poonam and Sushma have also played hockey at the national level. Sushma like Mamta, is still playing for the Railways.
Mamta's father Haripal Singh is a primary teacher and is posted in the village Bidhlan of the Sonipat district.
Born in a lower-middle-class family where her school teacher father had six other children to feed, Mamta Kharab's rise is an example of the struggle that women in Haryana have to make to realise their sporting ambitions
Ms. Mamta Kharb is a graduate from MD University, Rohtak. She has played a number of National and International Hockey matches/championships for India. Her sports achievements as per certificate given by Indian Women's Hockey Federation are as under:-

Moreover, she was declared Best Player of the Tournament and Best Scorer of the Tournament in the Junior Asia Cup, in Malaysia in 2000. Above all, keeping in view her best performance in hockey, the Haryana Government decorated her with prestigious awards: "Bhim Award" and Government of India with "Arjun Award" in 2003.
Mamta Kharb is a young, dynamic and versatile hockey player who is leading the Indian Women Hockey Team. As is evident from her sports achievements mentioned above, she played a number of matches and won bronze, silver and gold medals and was decorated with prestigious Bhim and Arjun Awards.
In view of above, she has been appointed as P/DSP by the State Government. [5] She has joined on 5 October 2007 and has been further deputed for her Basic Training at Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban.
India was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a 270-member strong contingent comprising 183 sportspersons and 77 officials. 2004 Summer Olympics silver medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was the flag bearer for India.
Seema Punia-Antil is an Indian discus thrower.Her personal best throw is 64.84 m,achieved at Kiev in 2004.
Akhil Kumar is an Indian boxer who has won several international and national boxing awards. He practices an "open guarded" boxing style. In 2005, the Indian government gave him the Arjuna Award for his achievements in international boxing. In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, appointed Akhil Kumar along with Mary Kom as national observers for boxing.
Saina Nehwal is an Indian professional badminton player. A former world no. 1, she has won 24 international titles, which includes ten Superseries titles. Although she reached the world's 2nd in 2009, it was only in 2015 that she was able to attain the world no. 1 ranking, thereby becoming the only female player from India and thereafter the second Indian player – after Prakash Padukone – to achieve this feat. She has represented India three times in the Olympics, winning a bronze medal in her second appearance at London 2012.

Geetika Jakhar is an Indian wrestler. Geetika comes from a family of sportspersons. She got Arjuna Award - 2006. She is the only women wrestler in the history of Indian sports to be judged the Best Wrestler of the 2005 Commonwealth Games and also who won medals at Asian Games 2006 and 2014 respectively. Geetika is the first woman wrestler being awarded with the Arjuna Award by Government of India in 2006. She is also a proud recipient of Bhim Award by government of Haryana. For her extraordinary achievements in the field of sports, the government of Haryana has appointed her to the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police in 2008.
The Indian women's national field hockey team represents India in international field hockey, and is governed by Hockey India. Nabhvarna are currently ranked 9th in the FIH World Rankings, and are ranked as the second best team in Asia. They have won the gold medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and 1982 Asian Games. They have also won the Women's Asia Cup twice, i.e. in 2004 and 2017. They also won the Asian Champions Trophy 2016 and 2023.
India participated in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Notable among the players was the Indian women's hockey team. The team entered the finals after defeating the Australian women's national field hockey team. They went on to receive the gold after winning the final game against the English women's hockey team. This win also marked a comeback for Mir Ranjan Negi who coached the team. Negi's involvement and the gold inspired the successful 2007 Shahrukh Khan film about women's field hockey, Chak De India.
Babita Kumari Phogat is a former Indian professional wrestler and a politician from the state of Haryana. She is a multiple Commonwealth Games medalist, winning the gold medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games, and silver medals at 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games. When she won the 2014 Commonwealth gold medal, she became the second Indian women wrestler to win a Commonwealth gold after Geeta Phogat, who had won it in 2010.
Rani Rampal, known mononymously as Rani, is an Indian field hockey player and coach. At the age of 15, she was the youngest player in the national team which participated in the 2010 World Cup. She has completed her schooling but was not able to get the graduate degree due to practice sessions and matches which were lined up. She plays forward on her team. She has played 212 international matches and scored 134 goals. She is currently the Captain for Indian Women's Hockey Team. She is also well known as a striker who often doubles up as mid-fielder. She has a great fascination with CWG. In 2020, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri.
Women's field hockey at the 2006 Commonwealth Games took place between 16 March and 25 March. The competition consisted of a round robin stage of two groups of five with the winners and runners-up of each group qualifying for the semifinals. All matches were played at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in the Parkville area of Melbourne.
Sakshi Malik is a former Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. In 2017, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award and in 2024, she became the first Indian wrestler to feature in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program, along with fellow female wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.
Shweta Chaudhry, also known as Shweta Singh, is an Indian sport shooter who competes in the 10 metre air pistol and 25 metre sports pistol events.
Savita Punia, known mononymously as Savita, is an Indian field hockey player and is a member of the India women's national field hockey team. She hails from Haryana and plays as the goalkeeper. Savita Punia is also known as "Great Wall of India" because of her phenomenal and outstanding performance in 2020 Summer Olympics.
Deepika Thakur is an Indian field hockey player and is currently the most senior and highest capped player of Indian women's Team. She plays as a Defender in the senior team and has represented India over 200 outings and has scored 24 goals.
Patricia Heberle is an international field hockey player, coach and administrator whose involvement has spanned the Australia women's national field hockey team and England women's national field hockey team.
Manu Bhaker is an Indian sport shooter. She has won 2 medals at the Olympics and World Championships, 19 medals at the World Cup and 4 medals at the Asian Championships. She won gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games and 2 bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Bhaker thus became the first Indian woman to win a shooting medal at the Olympics. She won another bronze, becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in an Olympics.
Sonam Malik is an Indian woman wrestler from Sonipat, Haryana. She won a gold medal at the National Games, and two gold medals at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. She won a bronze in 62 kg in the 2022 Asian Games.
Jyoti Chhatri is an Indian field hockey player and member of Indian women's hockey team. She hails from Panposh in Odisha. She is a product of Odisha Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre. She plays as a midfielder. She represented the junior Indian team in the 2023 Junior Asia Cup.
