Samarakoon Mudiyansalage Mangala Samarakoon [1] (born 26 August 1980) is a former Sri Lankan sport shooter. [2] [3] [4] [5] He also served as a non-commission officer for Sri Lanka Army as well staff sergeant of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps. [6]
Mangala was born in Nuwara Eliya in Central Province as the only child in his family. His father was primarily involved in farming as his family's main source of income was based on farming. [7] He was educated at the Madawala Maha Vidyalaya in Uva Paranagama where he also pursued his athletics career. [7]
After completing his primary and secondary education at the Madawala Maha Vidyalaya, Mangala joined Sri Lanka Army on 18 January 2000 initially to pursue his training in athletics. However, he soon switched to the sport of shooting a year later after being spotted for his talent for shooting during military training. He was also coached by former veteran sport shooter Pushpamali Ramanayake for several years. [1]
After taking the sport of shooting in 2001, he began competing in several international competitions including the South Asian Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. [1] He made his mark in the sport of shooting after claiming a gold medal in the men's 50m rifle prone event during the 2006 South Asian Games. [6] [8] He also went onto represent Sri Lanka at the 2006 Asian Games, 2010 Asian Games, 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2012 Summer Olympics, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2016 South Asian Games, 2016 Summer Olympics and 2019 South Asian Games. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics representing Sri Lanka in the men's 10 metre air rifle and men's 50 metre rifle prone which was also his maiden Olympic appearance. [12] [13] [14] [15] He failed to advance in both. Samarakoon also represented Sri Lanka at the 2016 Summer Olympics which was held in Rio de Janeiro. [16] During the 2016 Summer Olympics, he blamed the Sri Lanka Shooting Sports Federation for failing to provide him a suitable shooting kit which made his participation quite difficult when he was slotted to compete in the men's 10m air rifle event. [17] He was settled only for 50th position in the men's 10m air rifle event during the Rio Olympics. [18]
The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is the governing body of the Olympic shooting events. It also regulates several non-Olympic shooting sport events. The Federation's activities include regulation of the sport, managing Olympic qualification events and quota places, as well as organization of international competitions such as the ISSF World Cup series and ISSF World Championships.
Master Chief Petty Officer Sanjeev Rajput is an Arjuna Awardee Indian sport shooter from Yamuna Nagar, Haryana. He was a retired Junior Commissioned Officer in Indian Navy.
Abhinav Apjit Bindra is an Indian Olympic gold medallist, retired sport shooter, and businessman. He is the first and one of only two Indians to win an Individual Olympic Gold Medal. He is the first Indian to have held concurrently the world and Olympic titles for the men's 10-meter air rifle event, having earned those honors at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships. Bindra has also won seven medals at the Commonwealth Games and three medals at the Asian Games.

Sri Lanka participated at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which was held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its sixteenth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics, having missed only the 1976 Games. The delegation consisted of seven competitors: two athletics competitors, two badminton players one shooter and two short-distance swimmers. Cooray, Samarakoon and Karunaratne qualified for the Games by meeting their respective qualifying standards; the remainder of the team entered through wildcard or quota places. Karunarante was the flag bearer for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Péter Sidi is a Hungarian sport shooter. He has been world champion in the 50 m rifle 3 positions, as well as winning silver medals in the 300 m rifle prone and the men's 10 metre air rifle. He has also won bronze medals in the 50 metre rifle 3 positions and the 50 m rifle prone team event. He currently holds the qualification world record in 10 m Air Rifle.
Shooting competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were originally scheduled from 25 July to 3 August 2020, due to the postponement of the Summer Olympics to 2021, the rescheduled dates were on 24 July to 2 August 2021 at the Asaka Shooting Range. Unlike in 2016, the number of shooters competing across fifteen events at these Games had been reduced from 390 to 360, with an equal distribution between men and women. Furthermore, several significant changes were instituted in the Olympic shooting program, including the substitution of three male-only events, with the mixed team competitions.

Martina Lindsay Veloso is a Singaporean sports shooter. She won the gold medal in the 2014 ISSF World Cup in the 10 meters Air Rifle Women event and thus becoming the youngest ISSF shooter in getting one. She has also won the silver medal in 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. She was named Sportsgirl of the Year for 2015 and Sportswoman of the Year for 2019.
Seonaid McIntosh is a British sports shooter who became the World Champion at the 2018 ISSF World Shooting Championships in the 50m Prone Rifle event. In 2019 she became Britain's most successful female rifle shooter of all time, winning five World Cup medals. She also became the first British Woman to rank World #1 for the 50m Rifle Three Position event and became European Champion in the 300m Rifle Prone event with an equal World Record score.
Mehuli Ghosh is an Indian sport shooter. She represents India at international junior shooting championships across the world. Among 123 competitors, she was the only Indian shooting athlete to reach the finals of the 2018 junior shooting competition held in the Czech Republic. She ranked seventh there. In 2018, at the XXI Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast, Australia, she won a silver medal in Women's 10m Air Rifle after a shoot-off with Martina Veloso. As of September 2023, she was ranked 36th in the world and 14th in Asia.
Saurabh Chaudhary is an Indian sport shooter. He won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in 10 m Air Pistol. He was the youngest Indian gold medalist at the Asian Games. He had earlier won gold medals and set a new junior world record in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. He is the only Indian shooter to win a gold medal in ISSF World Championship, ISSF World Cup, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games and Asian Air Gun Championship. He broke his own world record with a score of 245.5 and claimed gold in Junior Men 10m Air Pistol at 2018 World Championship in Changwon, Korea.
Cameron Adam Snowden Pirouet is a Jersey born British sport shooter. He has represented Jersey at both the Island Games–at which he holds four games records–and the Commonwealth Games; his best result is a fourth-place finish in the Men's Smallbore Rifle event in 2018.
