Matthew James Welsh is an Australian swimmer who is the former world champion in the backstroke and butterfly. He took two golds in 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter backstroke, during one hour, at the World Championships in Shanghai 2006. Welsh retired from professional swimming in March 2008 when he failed to secure a place in the team for the Beijing Olympics.

John Joseph Murphy is an American former backstroke and freestyle swimmer who won a gold medal as a member of the U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. At the 1972 Olympics, the 19-year-old also earned a bronze medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke. He also competed in the preliminary heats of the men's 200-metre backstroke, but did not advance.
Mitchell Ivey is a former American international swimmer who was a backstroke specialist and Olympic medalist. Ivey later became a prominent Olympic and college swimming coach.
Andrea Prono Sánchez is a Paraguayan former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She is a 2000 Olympian and the cousin of Genaro Prono, an elite breaststroke swimmer, who later competed for Paraguay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
