Marengo County School District is the school district for Marengo County, Alabama. [3] The system educates more than 1,500 students and is one of the largest employers in the county with more than 200 employees. [4]
The district is governed by the Marengo County Board of Education. Board members are elected for a term of four years, with one member from each of the county's five voting precincts. [5] A superintendent, hired by the board, and support staff oversee the system on a daily basis. The current superintendent is Luther Hallmark. [1]
The county system operates three K–12 schools: Amelia Love Johnson High School in Thomaston, Marengo High School in Dixons Mills, and Sweet Water High School in Sweet Water. [4] [6] It operated four until it was decided in 2014 that John Essex High School in Demopolis would not reopen after the summer break. The district also operates one alternative school, based in Linden. The Pepper Jelly Festival and Rural Heritage Day, commonly known as the Pepper Jelly Festival, is an annual festival held the last Saturday in April in the Black Belt town of Thomaston, Alabama. The festival is hosted at the Alabama Rural Heritage Center, which is located in the old home economics building on the former Marengo County High School campus that was redesigned and repurposed by Auburn University's Rural Studio. The Pepper Jelly Festival is a celebration of rural life and traditions in western Alabama. Formerly named Rural Fun Day, the event was renamed in recognition of the unique pepper jelly made at the Rural Heritage Center. The festival features music, homemade food, art, crafts, entertainment, and other activities that reflect the culture of a rural Southern way of life. The festival is historically the second-largest held every year in Marengo County, behind Christmas on the River in Demopolis.
The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama, United States. It is the third oldest school system in Jefferson County preceded only by the Birmingham and Bessemer School Systems. The Jefferson County School System was created in 1896, and initially served all unincorporated communities and cities in the county other than Birmingham and Bessemer. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s various other cities began to establish their own separate systems. Today the County system serves students in those unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, Alabama such as Alliance, Bagley, Concord, Corner, Forestdale, McCalla, Minor, Mt. Olive, and Oak Grove. It also includes students who reside in the cities of Adamsville, Clay, Fultondale, Gardendale, Graysville, Hueytown, Irondale, Kimberly, Morris, Pinson, Pleasant Grove, and Warrior among others. Those cities listed below each have a city-based school system, therefore, their students do not attend schools in the Jefferson County School System:

The Old Marengo County Courthouse, built in 1850, is a Greek Revival courthouse building located in Linden, Alabama, U.S.A. It was the third building to serve as the courthouse for Marengo County, Alabama, out of a total of five purpose-built courthouses.
