Margaret Natalie Mensah-Williams (born 25 December 1961) is a Namibian politician,diplomat,and prominent SWAPO member. She currently [update] serves as Namibia's ambassador to the United States.
Mensah-Williams also served as a councillor of Windhoek 's Khomasdal North constituency from 1998 until 2019,and from this position was elected to represent Khomas Region in the National Council,the upper house of the Namibian Parliament from 2015 to 2019. In the National Council she was elected deputy chairperson in 1998,and chairperson in 2015. She resigned from all regional representative positions prior to the 2019 Namibian general election in order to contest for a seat in the National Assembly,Namibia's lower house,and subsequently became a member of Parliament.
Mensah-Williams was born in Mariental in central South West Africa (now Namibia). She attended school at Keetmanshoop. She obtained a teaching diploma from Dower College,South Africa,in 1983,a diploma in Housing and Community Development from the University of Cape Town in 1985,a diploma in Negotiation Skills from the Institute of Management and Leadership Training in Windhoek in 1992,and a further diploma in Management and Leadership from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute in Arusha,Tanzania,in 1993. Mensah-Williams ventured into politics during her time as a student at the University of Cape Town where she was involved in organising protest marches against the apartheid regime both in her native Namibia and in South Africa. [3] After university,she began her career as a teacher and later on worked in civil society. [1]
In the 1998 regional elections,Mensah-Williams became a councillor of Khomasdal North on a SWAPO ticket. [1] [3] She was subsequently selected to represent Khomas Region in the National Council,and in 1999 she became its vice-chairperson (Deputy Speaker),the first woman to be elected to a major decision-making position in Namibia. Mensah-Williams was re-elected as councillor for Khomasdal North in 2004,2010,and 2015. [5] She also continued to serve in the National Council and was elected chairperson in 2015.
Until March 2018, [6] Mensah-Williams served for two consecutive terms as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Executive Committee and served the same body as the President of the IPU Bureau of Women Parliamentarians for two terms. Furthermore,she was elected vice-chairperson of the IPU Working Group on Syria during the 137th IPU Assembly in Russia.
She resigned from all regional representative positions prior to the 2019 Namibian general election in order to contest for a seat in the National Assembly,Namibia's lower house, [7] and subsequently became a member of Parliament,and later resigned as a member of the National Assembly (01-12-2023). Mensah-Williams is a member of both the politburo and the central committee of the SWAPO Party. She is married with three children. [3]
Theo-Ben Gurirab was a Namibian politician who served in various senior government positions. He served as the second Prime Minister of Namibia from 28 August 2002 to 20 March 2005,following the demotion and subsequent resignation of Hage Geingob. Previously he was the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 2002,and was President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1999 to 2000. He was Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2005 to 2015,when he was replaced by Peter Katjavivi. Gurirab ultimately resigned from politics in 2015.
Khomas is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its name refers to the Khomas Highland,a high plateau landscape that dominates this administrative subdivision. Khomas is centered on the capital city Windhoek and provides for this reason superior transportation infrastructure. It is located in the central highlands of the country and is bordered by the Erongo region to the west and the northwest and by the Otjozondjupa region to the north. To the east is the Omaheke region,while in the south is the Hardap region. The region is characterized by its hilly countrysize and many valleys. It has well-developed economical,financial,and trade sectors. Khomas Region occupies 4.5% of the land area of Namibia but has the highest population of any of its regions (16.2%). Khomas is one of only three Namibian regions to have neither shoreline nor a foreign border.
Katutura Central is a constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia,comprising the extensions 2–5 and 7–11 of Windhoek's suburb Katutura. Katutura is a township that was founded by the then apartheid government of Namibia for black people in the 1950s,when the previous township,Old Location,was converted into the suburb Hochland Park.
Katutura East is a constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia. It consists of the extensions 1,6,and 19 of the suburb Katutura,a township within Windhoek that was founded by the then Apartheid government of Namibia for black people in the 1950s. It had a population of 18,501 in 2011,up from 17,745 in 2001. As of 2020,it has 15,878 registered voters.
Khomasdal Constituency is a constituency in Windhoek in the Khomas Region of Namibia. As of December 2019 it had 25,550 registered voters. The constituency consists of parts of the suburbs Khomasdal,Katutura,and Otjomuise. It had a population of 43,921 in 2011,up from 27,950 in 2001.
Windhoek East is a constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia. It consists of the upper-class suburbs of Windhoek:Auasblick,Avis,Klein Windhoek,Ludwigsdorf,Luxury Hill,Olympia,and Suiderhof. It had a population of 22,712 in 2011,up from 17,674 in 2001. As of 2020,it has 17,308 registered voters.
Windhoek Rural is a constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia. Its district capital is the settlement of Groot Aub. It had a population of 22,254 in 2011,up from 20,212 in 2001. As of 2020,it has 13,625 registered voters.
John Pandeni constituency,formerly known as Soweto,is an electoral constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia. In 2008,it was renamed after John Pandeni,a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) and its militant wing,the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN). Pandeni was the first regional councillor for the former Soweto constituency and the first governor of Khomas. This constituency is inside the city of Windhoek in the formerly all-Black suburb of Katutura. It had a population of 15,121 in 2011,up from 13,865 in 2001. As of 2020,it has 14,758 registered voters.
The National Council is the upper chamber of Namibia's bicameral Parliament. It reviews bills passed by the lower chamber and makes recommendations for legislation of regional concern to the lower chamber.
Erasmus Hendjala is a Namibian politician. Hendjala represented the Hakahana constituency and later Tobias Hainyeko constituency in Katutura,Windhoek,Khomas Region as a member of the ruling South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) from 1993 until August 2008. In 2008,Hendjala was abruptly expelled via letter for "serious misconduct and violation of the SWAPO constitution". A month later,Hendjala joined the Rally for Democracy and Progress and announced he would contest the regional by-election in October 2008,which was forced by his expulsion from SWAPO. However,three opposition parties including Hendjala's RDP withdrew prior to the election,ensuring an easy SWAPO victory. His wife,a member of the SWAPO women's council,did not leave SWAPO with her husband.
Loide Lucky Shoopala Kasingo is a Namibian politician and prominent trade unionist. A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),Kasingo has been a member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1996 and was a deputy minister from 1996 to 2005. She has served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament since 2010.
Windhoek West Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Khomas Region of Namibia. It contains the affluent suburbs of Hochland Park,Pioneers Park,Academia,Cimbebasia,Rocky Crest,Windhoek North and Windhoek West. It had a population of 53,438 in 2011,up from 42,201 in 2001. As of 2020,it has 33,556 registered voters.
Moses ǁGaroëb Constituency is an electoral constituency in Windhoek,the capital of Namibia. It had a population of 45,564 in 2011,up from 25,642 in 2001. As of 2020 it had 41,550 registered voters.
Clara ǁGowases (1960-2020) was a Namibian teacher and politician. Gowases was elected the chairperson of the Republican Party in September 2009 and subsequently listed second on the party's electoral list for the 2009 general election. Gowases missed out on being elected to the National Assembly as the party only won a single seat. In the February 2010 regional elections,Gowases ran to represent Windhoek Rural in the Regional Council of Khomas Region and was narrowly defeated by SWAPO's Frederick Arie. In March 2011,party president and National Assembly member Henk Mudge resigned and Gowases replaced him in both posts. She was a teacher by profession.
Hosea Nico Kaiyamo is a Namibian politician,an author and businessman who was the first regional councillor for the Tsumeb Constituency and a member of parliament in the National Council. He was an activist for South-West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) in its long struggle against South African rule until Namibia obtained independence on 21 March 1990. He was elected Regional Councillor for the Tsumeb Constituency in 1993 and remained in office until 2003. He was a member of parliament in the National Council from 1993 to 2003.
