Maria Karapetyan (born 20 February 1988) is an Armenian politician and a member of the National Assembly of Armenia for the Civil Contract. She has worked as a teacher at the Quality Schools International in Yerevan and was elected to parliament in 2018. She is a feminist and known for her support of the Armenian LGBT community. [1]
Maria Karapetyan was born on 20 February 1988 in Vanadzor, Soviet Armenia. She studied Intercultural Communication at the Yerevan Brusov State University from where she earned a bachelor's degree in 2008 and a master's degree in 2010. [2] She then moved to Rome, Italy, where she studied International Cooperation, Human Rights and Policy of the European Union at the University of Rome between 2013 and 2015. [1] [2] At the same time, she was also accepted as a student of the Cittadella della Pace in Rondine, Arrezzo. [3]
After she obtained her BA, she worked as a teacher at the Quality Schools International in Yerevan from 2008 until 2013. [2] Between 2011 and 2018 she took part in the editorial board for the Journal of Conflict Transformation's Caucasus Edition. [4]
Karapetyan's political activism began with her opposition to Serge Sargsyan. At night, together with a group of political activists she sprayed the slogan Reject Serzh on prominent streets in Yerevan in support of the Armenian Revolution of 2018. [1] [5] She became known for her so-called Sisters speech [1] in which she advocated for equal rights for women and men on the Republic Square in Yerevan. [6] [1] In the parliamentary election of December 2018, she was elected as a candidate of the Civil Contract within the My Step Alliance. [2]
Human rights in Armenia tend to be better than those in most former Soviet republics and have drawn closer to acceptable standards, especially economically. Still, there are several considerable problems.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Armenia face legal and social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, due in part to the lack of laws prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity and in part to prevailing negative attitudes about LGBT persons throughout society.

Karen Vilhelmi Karapetyan is an Armenian politician who was Prime Minister of Armenia from September 2016 until April 2018. He was previously Mayor of Yerevan, the capital, from 2010 to 2011. He was appointed prime minister by President Serzh Sargsyan on 13 September 2016 and held office until 9 April 2018. Karapetyan served as first deputy prime minister from 17 April to 23 April 2018, when he was appointed acting prime minister following the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan. He held this position until the election of Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister on 8 May 2018.
The 2011 Armenian protests were a series of civil demonstrations aimed at provoking political reforms and concessions from both the government of Armenia and the civic government of Yerevan, its capital and largest city. Protesters demanded President Serzh Sargsyan release political prisoners, prosecute those responsible for the deaths of opposition activists after the 2008 presidential election and institute democratic and socioeconomic reforms, including the right to organise in Freedom Square in downtown Yerevan. They also protested against Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan for banning the opposition from Freedom Square and barring vendors and traders from the city streets. The opposition bloc Armenian National Congress, which has played a major role in organising and leading the demonstrations, had also called for a snap election and the resignation of the government.

The 2018 Armenian Revolution, most commonly known in Armenia as #MerzhirSerzhin, was a series of anti-government protests in Armenia from April to May 2018 staged by various political and civil groups led by a member of the Armenian parliament — Nikol Pashinyan. Protests and marches took place initially in response to Serzh Sargsyan's third consecutive term as the most powerful figure in the government of Armenia and later against the Republican Party-controlled government in general. Pashinyan declared it a Velvet Revolution.
Tigran Avinyan is an Armenian politician and businessman currently serving as the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia from 2018 to 2021 in Nikol Pashinyan's government. He is a founding member of the ruling Civil Contract Party. The My Step Alliance was a political alliance in Armenia formed by the Civil Contract party, the Mission Party and various independent representatives of civil society. It was formed in August 2018, before the 2018 Yerevan City Council election. The leader of the alliance was the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. Despite its dissolution as a national party in May 2021, the My Step Alliance operated in the Yerevan City Council until the end of its mandate in September 2023.
