Quality Schools International (QSI) is a group of non-profit international schools offering education in the English language, in a number of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South and North America. The first school was founded in 1971. The organization's world headquarters is located in Malta. [1] The organization's founders and co-presidents are Jim Gilson and Duane Root.

Associations

QSI schools are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). [2] The chain is a member of CEESA, the Central and Eastern European Schools Association for US Overseas schools. [3] Two schools, QSI Benin and QSI Djibouti, are members of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). [4]

QSI schools often serve as College Board Advanced Placement and/or SAT testing centers. [5] They participate in the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society.

QSI offers an International Baccalaureate diploma at some of its larger schools. [6]

QSI is a partner organization with NWEA and offers the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) computerized adaptive standardized test at all school locations. The United States government U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools provides funding and assistance to QSI schools [7]

History

Quality Schools International is an outgrowth of Sanaa International School, founded in Yemen in 1971. The co-founders, Jim Gilson and Duane Root, attended the same university. [8] In 1991, Gilson founded QSI together with Duane Root.

Corporate affairs

The headquarters are in Naxxar, Malta. [1] Previously the head office was in Ljubljana, Slovenia, [9] an arrangement which began in 2003. [10] Before then, the headquarters were in Sanaa, Yemen. [11]

Individual schools

As of January 2024, QSI operates 37 schools in 31 countries including an online school, QSI Virtual School. [12] [ self-published source? ]

In Europe, QSI operates schools located in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. In Asia, QSI operates schools in China, East Timor, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, and Vietnam. In the Caucasus, QSI operates schools in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. In Africa, QSI operates schools in Benin, Togo, and Djibouti. In the Americas, QSI operates schools in Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Founded by QSI in 1994, it is a private, non-profit, coeducational, day school which offers an educational program from a 3 to 4 year old program through high school for students of all nationalities. High school students may take courses by distance learning through Quality Schools International Distance Learning. School staff monitors all distance learning courses.

Almaty International School (AIS) is a private school located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Founded by QSI in 1993, it is the third largest school out of all the QSI schools. The school offers an American-based Pre-K and K-12 programs. School facilities include: an elementary building, secondary building, annex, small gym, big gym, library, cafeteria, birch room, birch tree area, field with an Olympic size track, 3 playgrounds, and the teachers apartments. The school hosts international events and participates in many sports events such as the CAXC, CASC, CABC, and CAVC. The school is also used as a site for SAT, PSAT and AP testing. The school is operated with the authorization of the Kazakhstani Government.

Kyiv International School is a private international school located in Kyiv, Ukraine. It opened in 1992. The school is a member of Quality Schools International (QSI), a consortium of nonprofit college-preparatory schools following an American-style, international curriculum. It is a current member of CEESA. The school operates with the approval of the Ukrainian government and offers a PreK - Grade 12 education in the English language, including a DP International Baccalaureate program as well as Advanced Placement courses. The school year is from August to June.

The American International School, Abu Dhabi is a private, for profit international Preschool-12th grade school offering an American curriculum. The college-preparatory IB Diploma Program (IBDP) is offered in grades 11 and 12, and the IB Primary Years Program (IBPYP) is offered from KG to Grade 5. The school is coeducational in elementary, and gender-segregated in secondary.

CEESA is an association of international schools in Central and Eastern Europe. The member schools are all sponsored by the United States Department of State, Office of Overseas Schools.

Lincoln Community School (LCS) is a private school in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. It is a non-profit, college-preparatory, international school. There is an expatriate population associated with the various embassies, Foreign Service agencies, NGO's, United Nations organisations, and international businesses. Lincoln Community School is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programs. The school has a large number of students whose parents are Ghanaian nationals. 25% of the students are Americans, 8% are Ghanaians, and 67% are from other countries. English is the language of instruction. Classes are offered from Pre-school through to grade 12. The school year is divided into 2 semesters and additionally into quarterly assessment periods. It was established in 1968.

Khartoum American School, founded in 1957, is an international school in Khartoum, Sudan that teaches an American/International curriculum. The school is a full member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is accredited jointly through CIS and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA).

The American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS) is a non-profit, co-educational school operating in the United Arab Emirates. It was founded in 1972, and follows an American, standards-based curriculum with English instruction. ACS offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma, as well as a rigorous college preparatory American based diploma. ACS is affiliated with the Office of Overseas Schools, United States Department of State.

The American International School of Kuwait is a private school located in Maidan Hawalli, Kuwait, offering education from grades K to 12. The school has been a member of IBO since 1993. Cairo American College is a Pre-K–12 International American School located in Maadi, Cairo, Egypt. It caters mainly to dependents of the local American embassy and other international students. Cairo American College is not a for-profit school.

Baku International School (BIS) is an international school located in Baku, Azerbaijan, which was established by the Quality Schools International (QSI) group in 1994. The school provides preschool education, elementary education, middle school, and secondary education. The school programs are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) in the United States.

QSI International School of Astana is a branch of Quality Schools International located in Astana, Kazakhstan. QSI Astana was founded in 2005 as a non-profit, private institution. QSI International School of Astana has an English language of instruction; it offers a curriculum taught entirely in English from elementary school to secondary school. In 2013 a new facility completed construction. The facility contains 32 classrooms, 3 computer labs, an auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, library, outdoor soccer field and basketball court, and several playgrounds. Classes range from Preschool to High School level.
