She placed second runner-up in the Miss Brasil pageant, as the representative of Guanabara, in 1968, hence, earning the ticket for Maria to compete in the Miss International pageant in the latter part of the year, when it was held for the first time in Tokyo, Japan. Her knowledge of the Japanese language helped her win over the crowd and judges.
Her victory came in the same year that Martha Vasconcellos, winner of the Miss Brasil pageant, won the Miss Universe title.

Miss Brasil Pageant is a beauty contest that has been held since 1954 between winners of the pageants in the states of Brazil. The winner of Miss Brazil competes in the Miss Universe. The Miss Brazil, and Brazil itself, are responsible for one of the most successful campaigns in history of Miss Universe, with two winners and several runners-up, finalists and semifinalists. Fedorova was dethroned four months later and 1st runner-up Justine Pasek of Panama took over the Miss Universe title.

It was held on November 4, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines. Katherine Espín of Ecuador crowned her successor Karen Ibasco of the Philippines at the end of the event. This is the fourth time Philippines won Miss Earth.
Miss International 2018, the 58th Miss International pageant, was held on November 9, 2018 at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Kevin Liliana from Indonesia crowned her successor Mariem Velazco from Venezuela at the end of the event. This is the third time in Miss International history that the finals night saw the return of the previous year's runners-up to crown their respective successors. This year Miss International comeback edition with the theme "Cheer All Woman" alongside Miss International Japan 2019.
Mayra Benita Alves Dias is a Brazilian model and beauty pageant titleholder. She was crowned Miss Brasil 2018 on 26 May 2018, becoming the second representative from Amazonas. She represented Brazil at the Miss Universe 2018.
