Mariam Abdul-Rashid (born 21 September 1997) is a Canadian track and field athlete who competes as a sprint hurdler. [1]
From Oshawa, she started training in athletics when she was six years old. [2] She attended Eastdale Collegiate school and trained with the Speed Academy in Pickering, Ontario prior to signing a letter of intent at 17 years-of-age to run with a scholarship at the University of Texas. [3] [4] [5]
Initially just a sprinter, she started to compete in hurdles in 2014. She won three gold medals at the Canadian youth championships in 2014 and finished fifth in the 400m hurdles at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics. [3] [4] [5]
Abdul-Rashid finished 8th in 400m hurdles at 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Poland. [6] [7]
She was a bronze medalist in the 100m hurdles at the 2019 NACAC U18 and U23 Championships in Athletics in Querétaro, Mexico. [8] [9]
Abdul-Rashid finished second in the 100m hurdles at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in July 2023, running 12.83 seconds, 0.01 of a second behind winner Michelle Harrison. [10] She was subsequently selected for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in August 2023. [11] Competing in Budapest, she finished sixth in her heat in a time of 13.04 seconds. [12] [13]
She ran a personal best time of 8.01 seconds to in the women’s 60m hurdles in Clemson, South Carolina in February 2024. Abdul-Rashid was selected as part of the Canadian team for the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow to compete in the 60 metres hurdles, where she qualified for the semi-finals and set a new personal best time of 7.99 seconds. Abdul-Rashid has earned a Masters degree in Communications & Media Studies from the University of East London, and a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences from the University of Texas. [16]
60 metres, or 60-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field. It is a championship event for indoor championships, normally dominated by the best outdoor 100 metres runners. At indoor events, the 60 metres is run on lanes set out in the middle of the 'field', as is the hurdles event over the same distance, thus avoiding some of the effects of the banked track encircling the venue, upon which other track events in indoor events are run. At outdoor venues it is a rare distance, at least for senior athletes. The format of the event is similar to other sprint distances. The sprinters follow three initial instructions: 'on your marks', instructing them to take up position in the starting blocks; 'set', instructing them to adopt a more efficient starting posture, which also isometrically preloads their muscles. This will enable them to start faster. The final instruction is the firing of the starter's pistol. Upon hearing this the sprinters stride forwards from the blocks.
Falk Balzer is a former German hurdler and the son of former East German hurdler Karin Balzer. He is best known for winning the silver medal at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest, Hungary and the bronze medal at the 1999 World Indoor Championships. He represented his native country at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Falk Balzer is the German national record holder in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.41s.
Cyréna Samba-Mayela is a French athlete who competes in the 60 metres hurdles and 100 metres hurdles. She won the gold medal in the 60 m hurdles at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, a silver medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships where she lowered the current French national record to 7.73 seconds, and the gold medal at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, where she established a new personal best, national record and championship record at 12.31 seconds.
Gabriele “Gabbi” Cunningham is an American Olympic track athlete. She won the bronze medal in the 60 metres hurdles at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
Julien Alfred is a Saint Lucian sprinter. She won the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 100 metres event, setting a new national record of 10.72s in the final. Her medal was the first-ever Olympic medal for Saint Lucia. In the Women's 200 metres at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Alfred won a silver medal. Alfred also won the gold medal in the 60 metres at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships.
