Colonel Mariano Quijano Yenko Jr. was the second commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association. [1] He served as the Defense Assistant Executive Secretary [2] under Executive Secretary Fred Ruiz Castro [3] and Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, [4] and Undersecretary under Carlos P. Garcia, [5] and as Philippine Airlines' Vice-President Corporate Secretary. The Ateneo de Manila University's Audio-Visual Room at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Complex was named after him. [6] His son Ignatius Yenko served as PBA's Chairman and as PLDT's First Vice President.
Yenko became the second PBA commissioner in 1983 and under his term the PBA entered its second phase,the post-EDSA era after the disbandment of Crispa-Toyota. Yenko managed to turn around the league's fortunes by popularizing the Ginebra San Miguel team during his tenure. Revenue remained strong and the PBA welcomed new legends such as Allan Caidic to carry the new generation. He was succeeded as the Commissioner by Rodrigo Salud during the start of PBA's 1988 season. Yenko was posthumously inducted into the Philippine Basketball Association Hall of Fame in 2011. [8]
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a men's professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of twelve company-branded franchised teams. Founded in 1975,it is the first professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest continuously professional basketball league existing in the world after the NBA,established before the "open era" of basketball in 1990 where FIBA allowed longstanding domestic leagues,which mostly had predated the PBA,to become professional. The league's regulations are a hybrid of rules from the NBA and FIBA.
Jose Emmanuel "Noli" M. Eala is a Filipino sports executive and disbarred lawyer who served as the 11th chairperson of the Philippine Sports Commission from August 30 to December 28,2022. He previously served as the sixth commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association from 2003 to 2007. Vincent "Chot" P. Reyes is a Filipino basketball head coach for the Philippine national basketball team,where he led the team to a historic silver medal finish at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship and the subsequent appearance at the 2014 FIBA World Cup,the country's first in 36 years. Reyes is a five-time PBA Coach of the Year. He is the President of TV5 Network,Inc. and president of Media5,which served as the sales and marketing arm of TV5. Tomás "Tommy" La'O Manotoc Sr. is a Filipino golfer and former basketball coach. As a basketball coach of several PBA teams,Manotoc won six PBA titles,including a grand slam with the fabled Crispa Redmanizers. Manotoc is the chairman emeritus of the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP). He also served as president of the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) from 2012 to 2014. He occasionally writes as a sports columnist for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and was a TV panelist for the PBA coverage from 2000 to 2002.
