Marianthi Markatou is a Greek-American biostatistician whose research interests include robust statistics and semiparametric models, the applications of natural language processing in the statistics derived from medical records, drug safety, [1] and chemokines as biomarkers. She is Associate Chair of Research and Healthcare Informatics and SUNY Distinguished Professor at the University at Buffalo. [2]

Education and career

Markatou has a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Patras in Greece, and a master's degree in statistics from the University of Rochester. [2] She completed a Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University in 1988. Her dissertation, Robust Bounded Influence Tests in Linear Models, was supervised by Thomas Hettmansperger. [3]

She became a professor of biostatistics and biomedical informatics at Columbia University, before taking her present position at the University at Buffalo. [4] She was named a distinguished professor in 2021. [5] In 2022 she was appointed co-editor-in-chief of International Statistical Review. [4]

Recognition

Markatou is a Fulbright Scholar, and an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute. [2] She was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2004, [6] and as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2021, "for outstanding accomplishments on fundamental research in robust statistics and for a strong commitment to the advancement of statistical science through interdisciplinary research and professional service". Rajan Batta is an American operations research scientist, and a SUNY Distinguished Professor at University at Buffalo. Batta earned his doctorate in Operations Research in 1984 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a member of University at Buffalo faculty beginning in 1984. He also has had several administrative appointments, including Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Interim Dean, and Associate Dean in various capacities of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University at Buffalo (UB). At present, he serves in the role of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Recognition.

Regina Y. Liu is an American statistician. She is a distinguished professor of statistics and chair of the Department of Statistics and Biostatistics at Rutgers University. Louise Marie Ryan is an Australian biostatistician, a distinguished professor of statistics in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney, president-elect of the International Biometric Society, and an editor-in-chief of the journal Statistics in Medicine. She is known for her work applying statistics to cancer and risk assessment in environmental health.

Kimberly Flagg Sellers is an American statistician. She has been the head of the statistics department at North Carolina State University since 2023, where she is the first Black woman in the university's history to lead a science department. Previously, Dr. Sellers was a full professor of statistics at Georgetown University and a principal researcher in the Center for Statistical Research and Methodology of the United States Census Bureau, the former chair of the Committee on Women in Statistics of the American Statistical Association, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. She specializes in count data and statistical dispersion, and is "the leading expert" on the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution for count data. Bhramar Mukherjee is an Indian-American biostatistician, data scientist, professor and researcher. She has been appointed as the inaugural Senior Associate Dean of Public Health Data Science and Data Equity at the Yale School of Public Health starting August 1, 2024. She currently works as the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics, Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health and the Chair of Department of Biostatistics, a professor of epidemiology and global public health at the University of Michigan. She serves as the associate director for Quantitative Data Sciences at University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. In 2023 Mukherjee was also appointed as the inaugural Assistant Vice President of Research: Research Data Strategy at the University of Michigan Office of Vice President of Research. Mukherjee holds a Senior Honorary Visiting Fellow position at the Biostatistics Unit of the Medical Research Council, working on the theme of population health at the University of Cambridge, UK. Mukherjee is also appointed as an overseas fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. Her research concerns environmental epidemiology, and its combination with genetics in susceptibility to disease, including running the Sister Study on how environmental and genetic effects can lead to breast cancer. She has also published highly cited research on fertility.
