Marilou Schultz (born November 6, 1954) is a Navajo weaver, artist, and educator. She has exhibited her weavings nationally and internationally, including at the documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany. [1]

Schultz is a math teacher as well as an artist, and she is known for her science and data-inspired weavings. [2]

Early life and education

Marilou Schultz was born in Safford, Arizona, on November 6, 1954. [3] She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation and is born to Tabaaha (Water’s Edge Clan) and born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan) and grew up in Leupp, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. [4]

At least four generations of her relatives, including her mother and great-great-grandmother, were also weavers. [4] [5] She is the aunt of textile artist Melissa Cody. [6] Her mother is the respected weaver Martha Gorman Schultz. [4] She began learning the craft at the age of seven by watching her mother, and sold her weaved rugs during her childhood and into her college years. [4] [7]

Schultz attended Arizona State University (ASU) and received a bachelor's and master's degree in education, as well as a certificate for teaching mathematics from the Native American Education Leadership Program at ASU. [5] [8]

Teaching career

Schultz is a math teacher in the Mesa Public Schools, [2] [4] and has served as a home-school liaison and coordinator for leadership and support programs for Native American youth. [9]

In the summers, she teaches weaving workshops. [4]

Weaving

Although she began weaving as a means of financial support, her love of the craft has evolved into a method of innovation and sharing her culture with others. She utilizes traditional methods learned from her mother such as plain weave, twill and double twill, and raised outline weavings, though she has also developed unique dyeing techniques with both aniline and natural dyes. [10] [4] Natural dyes that she uses includes cochineal and indigo. [4] She frequently uses wool from Churro sheep raised by her family. [11]

Math and technology–inspired weavings

In 1994, Intel commissioned Schultz to weave "Replica of a Chip," which depicted a Pentium microprocessor, a computer circuit board, and referenced the historical workforce of Navajo women assembling circuit boards at an Intel factory located on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico. [12] [13]

Awards and honors

Schultz has won several awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, including the Special Award for Excellence in Navajo Weaving in 1994, and the Challenge Award in Non-Traditional Weavings in 1997. [14] [7] She was also awarded a fellowship by the market's organization, SWAIA, in 1994. [7] At the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market, Schultz received the inaugural Conrad House Innovation Award from the Heard Museum Guild in 2001. [15]

Selected exhibitions

Schultz exhibited at documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany. She has also shown internationally in U.S. Embassies. [4]

Curators Velma Kee Craig (Diné), Natalia Miles (Diné/Akimel O'otham/Apache), and Ninabah Winton (Diné) featured Schultz's work in the Heard Museum's traveling survey of contemporary Navajo weaving, Color Riot!. This exhibition began at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and traveling to venues nationwide, including the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey [16] and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg in Florida.

Replica of a Chip was included in a 2024 exhibition, Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction at the National Gallery of Art. [17] [6]

As one art historian wrote, "Classic Navajo serapes at their finest equal the delicacy and sophistication of any pre-mechanical loom-woven textile in the world."

Clara Nezbah Sherman was a Navajo artist particularly known for her Navajo rugs. Born Nezbah Gould, her mother was of the Hashtłʼishnii clan, and her father was of the Naashashí Dineʼé. She was the last surviving member of ten siblings including an adopted sister. Sherman and her siblings learned to weave as children from her family, who specialized in the craft. Clara had several children with her husband, John Sherman. Her daughters and granddaughters also learned to weave.

Mary Holiday Black was a Navajo basket maker and textile weaver from Halchita, Utah. During the 1970s, in response to a long-term decline in Navajo basketry, Black played a key role in the revival of Navajo basket weaving by experimenting with new designs and techniques, pioneering a new style of Navajo baskets known as "story baskets."

D.Y. Begay is a Navajo textile artist born into the Tóʼtsohnii Clan and born from the Táchiiʼnii Clan.

Melissa Cody is a Navajo textile artist from No Water Mesa, Arizona, United States. Her Germantown Revival style weavings are known for their bold colors and intricate three dimensional patterns. Cody maintains aspects of traditional Navajo tapestries, but also adds her own elements into her work. These elements range from personal tributes to pop culture references.

Grace Henderson Nez was a Navajo weaver, known for her traditional designs. Her main styles were old designs from the 19th century and Ganado style. Some of her work was demonstrated at the Hubbell Trading Post, which is home to an archive of works from various Navajo weavers. Before her death in 2006, she was able to win two lifetime achievement awards for her work, including a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

TahNibaa Naataanii is a Native American traditional artist and a member of the Navajo Tribe. She has espoused a belief that creativity should be allowed to be the source of art and that artists should not have to confine themselves to a particular style. Naataanii has also stated that weaving art and tradition should be passed along to present and future generations, with her art techniques and mediums being the traditional form, and artistic style dependent on the artist.

Sierra Nizhoni Teller Ornelas is a Native American showrunner, screenwriter, filmmaker and sixth-generation tapestry weaver from Tucson, Arizona. She is one of three co-creators of the scripted NBC (Peacock) comedy series Rutherford Falls, alongside Ed Helms and Mike Schur.

Joyce Begay-Foss is a Diné weaver, educator, and curator. She is the director of education at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. For her weavings, she has received more than 20 awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market and Eight Northern Pueblos arts and crafts show.

Barbara Teller Ornelas is a Native American weaver and citizen of the Navajo Nation. She also is an instructor and author about this art. She has served overseas as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department. A fifth-generation Navajo weaver, she exhibits her fine art textiles and educates about Navajo culture at home and abroad.

Daisy Taugelchee was a Navajo weaver. The Denver Art Museum declared Taugelchee as "widely considered the most talented Navajo weaver and spinner who ever lived". In 2004 one of her rugs was featured on a United States Postal Service stamp.

Irene Emery (1900–1981) was an American art historian, scholar, curator, textile anthropologist, sculptor, and modern dancer. She was known for her pioneering research in systematically describing global textiles, and was a leading authority on ancient fabrics and textiles, and for her published book The Primary Structures of Fabrics: An Illustrated Classification (1966).

Tyrrell Tapaha is a Diné textile artist who makes pictorial woven works. Tapaha is a sixth generation weaver who grew up on the Navajo Nation at Goat Springs, Arizona. In 2022 they received the Brandford/Elliott Award from the American Textile Society.

Mabel Burnside Myers (1922–1987) was a Diné weaver, herbalist and sheepherder. She is known for being the first Indigenous weaver to create dye charts for teaching students.
