Marina O'Loughlin is a British journalist, writer and restaurant critic.
She was the regular weekly restaurant reviewer in the London Metro from 2006 to 2012, before moving to The Guardian , where she took over from John Lanchester. In 2017 she left The Guardian to become restaurant critic for The Sunday Times .
She had a monthly travel column in the BBC Olive magazine detailing her food trips to locations including Macau and Glasgow, before moving on to BBC Good Food. [1]
She has also worked on a freelance basis for The Independent [2] and London Evening Standard [3] newspapers and Noble Rot Magazine [4]
She is one of the most decorated restaurant critics working today, having been awarded the Guild of Food Writers' Restaurant Reviewer of the Year twice; once in 2011 [5] and again in 2015 [6] as well as Fortnum and Mason awards for Restaurant Writing in 2014 [7] and 2015 [8] and the prestigious 2015 Press Award for Criticism. She is thought to be Glaswegian by birth, [10] but now lives with her husband and two children between London and the Isle of Thanet on the Kent Coast.
She was said to be one of the most influential Londoners in the annual Evening Standard "1000 Most Influential People in London" supplement in 2008, [11] and again in 2010 [12] and 2012. Union Street Café was a restaurant, owned by chef Gordon Ramsay, in Southwark, London. It was the first of Ramsay's restaurants to be opened without the involvement of Chris Hutchinson, and at one point was backed by footballer David Beckham. The Café served Mediterranean cuisine, with mostly Italian dishes. The head chef, Davide Degiovanni, designed the menu, which was changed daily. Before the Café was opened, it received more than 10,000 booking requests, with seating filled to the end of the year. Food critics' reviews have been mixed, with differing opinions of the veal saltimbocca but agreement in dislike of a dish of octopus, borlotti bean, and 'nduja sausage. Union Street Café was replaced by Gordon Ramsay Restaurants in December 2020 with their third Street Pizza Location, joined at that address in May 2021 by their second Bread Street Kitchen & Bar location for London.
