Marjon Lambriks (born 5 April 1949) is a Dutch soprano who made an international career, especially in Austria. Her focus became operetta, whether performed on stage, for the radio, or in recordings. She recorded the role of Annina in Verdi's La traviata alongside Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti.

Life

Born in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Lambriks studied singing at the Maastricht Academy of Music and with Paula Lindberg in Amsterdam. [1] [2] She won a prize at a 1970 competition which enabled her to study further at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. [1] In 1971, she won the grand prize of the city of Salzburg during the Salzburg Festival, which resulted in offers to play for major opera houses. [3]

Lambriks signed with the Wiener Kammeroper [3] and sang with it from 1971, including in Una cosa rara . [1] From 1972 she was a member of the Vienna Volksoper, where she appeared as Hänsel in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel , and in operettas, among others. In the 1974/75 season, she was also engaged at the Opernhaus Wuppertal. [1] In 1977, she became the first singer of the Volksoper after the dismissal of Julia Migenes. [4] She remained at the Volksoper until 1986, performing roles such as Niklausse in Offenbach's Hoffmanns Erzählungen , Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Nancy in Britten's Albert Herring . [1] At the Vienna State Opera, she performed in several productions. [5] She appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1979 and 1980 as the Priestess in Verdi's Aida , and in 1980 also in a Mozart concert. She performed as a guest at the Bregenz Festival, in Klagenfurt, Antwerp and at the Opernhaus Zürich. [1]

From 1976, she appeared predominantly in the Netherlands, [1] performing as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni . She became more widely known in 1977 through television appearances in KRO's programs of Viennese songs, Wiener Melange. [2] In 1979, she performed for the AVRO in a music programme specially designed for her, in which the music of various operetta composers in turn took centre stage: Franz Lehár, Robert Stolz and Johann Strauss. [2] She also participated in concerts led by Willi Boskovsky, Ein Abend in Wien, in which she regularly sang in duet with Rudolf Schock. [1] [6] On German television, she became well known for her operetta performances, including a series with parodies. [1] In 1987, she appeared in a Christmas show on television for the Dutch AVRO as well as a radio special for the NCRV. [7] In 2009, a biography was written on her life and four-decade career. [8] On 5 May 2010, she celebrated the end of her 40-year career as an opera and operetta singer with a performance at the liberation concert in Amsterdam. [2]

Recordings

Lambriks participated in recordings that Herbert von Karajan conducted: his version of Mozart's Figaro with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1978, [9] and of Wagner's Parsifal in 1979/80 with the Berlin Philharmonic and Peter Hofmann in the title role. [10] Richard Bonynge conducted a recording of Verdi's La traviata with Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti in the leading roles, and with Lambriks as Annina. [1] [11]

Margarethe Bence was an American opera singer, who sang both mezzo-soprano and contralto parts and was mostly active in German and Austria, including international festivals such as the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg Festival. Her repertoire included music from Baroque to contemporary premieres.

Ernst Gutstein was an Austrian operatic baritone. He made an international career and also performed regularly at the Vienna State Opera. His repertoire included both tragic and comic characters, one of his signature roles being Faninal in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. Gutstein created several roles in world premieres, such as Fortner's Perlimplin at the 1962 Schwetzingen Festival.

Elżbieta Szmytka is a Polish operatic soprano. She has appeared internationally, including at the Vienna State Opera, where she performed Mozart roles such as Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Despina in Così fan tutte. In 1999, she recorded Chopin's Polish songs and performed in a concert in 2018 celebrating a century of Polish independence as a soloist in Górecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.

Peter Lagger was a Swiss bass in opera and concert. He was a member of European opera houses, finally the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and appeared as a guest internationally. He took part in world premieres such as Louise Talma's Die Alkestiade at the Oper Frankfurt, and Henze's Die Bassariden and Penderecki's Magnificat, both at the Salzburg Festival.

Maria Gerhart, also Marie Gerhart, married name Maria Gerhart-Gschwandtner was an Austrian operatic soprano.

Polly Batic was an Austrian operatic mezzo-soprano who appeared in Europe. She frequently appeared at the Salzburg Festivals between the world wars in roles such as Annina in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss and Marcellina in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. After World War II, she became an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera. She often appeared in contemporary opera, including the world premiere of Der Prozeß in Salzburg in 1953.

Margarita Vitalievna Gritskova is a Russian mezzo-soprano in opera and lied singing. A member of the Vienna State Opera since 2012, she is focused on roles by Rossini such as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola, but has also performed in Baroque opera and contemporary works such as Tri sestri by Péter Eötvös.

Claus Guth is a German theatre director, focused on opera. He has directed operas at major houses and festivals, including world premieres such as works of the Munich Biennale, and Berio's Cronaca del luogo at the Salzburg Festival in 1999. Guth is particularly known for his opera productions of the works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He has received two Faust awards, for Daphne by Richard Strauss in 2010, and for Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, both at the Oper Frankfurt.
