Air Vice-Marshal Mark Robert Flewin, CBE is a senior Royal Air Force who currently serves as Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group RAF, headquartered at RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

RAF career

From 1 September 1996 to 1 September 1997, Flewin held a one-year commission in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as an acting pilot officer. [1] [2] He then graduated from university with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree. [3] He was commissioned in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a pilot officer on 5 April 1998. [3] [4] He underwent pilot training and was posted to fly the Jaguar. [5] After qualifying as a weapons instructor, he undertook a number of operational tours, including deployment to enforce the no-fly zones over Iraq. [5] He took command of 1 (Fighter) Squadron at RAF Leuchars in September 2012. [6]

Flewin went on to be commander of No. 903 Expeditionary Air Wing as part of Operation Shader in 2014, chief of staff within the Air Staff at the Ministry of Defence in 2014 and chief of staff, Joint Effects at Permanent Joint Headquarters in 2016. He was promoted to group captain on 30 August 2016. [7] In 2018, he became station commander at RAF Coningsby, [8] and was awarded the Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. [9]

After completing of the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy, he became Head Operations, Plans & Training, United Kingdom Space Command at RAF High Wycombe in May 2021. [10] He was appointed Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group RAF in January 2023. [11]

Flewin was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours. [12]

Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Kevin Burridge, is a retired Royal Air Force officer. A former Nimrod pilot, Burridge was in overall command of British forces under Operation Telic during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael James Graydon, is a retired Royal Air Force (RAF) officer. He was a fast jet pilot in the 1960s, a squadron commander in the 1970s and a station commander in the 1980s before serving as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief RAF Strike Command during the Gulf War. He was Chief of the Air Staff from 1992 to 1997 in which role he advised the British Government on the implementation of No Fly Zones in Iraq and Bosnia and implemented the Front Line First initiative.

He served as Chief of the Air Staff during the late 1980s, when the Boeing Airborne early warning and control system was ordered and the European Fighter programme was being developed. He then served as Chief of the Defence Staff during the Gulf War. He was granted a life peerage as Baron Craig of Radley after his retirement from active service in 1991, sitting as a crossbencher. As of 2022, he is the last living officer in the British Armed Forces to have held a five-star rank whilst on active service.

Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Denis Frank Spotswood, was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force. He fought in the Second World War as a flying boat pilot and then as a coastal reconnaissance squadron commander during Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. He served as a station commander in the late 1940s and early 1950s before becoming a senior air commander in the late 1950s. As the Chief of the Air Staff in the early 1970s he had a major role in implementing the defence savings demanded by the Heath Government in the face of economic difficulties at the time.
